JOB PURPOSE:
The Patent department at the Novartis Institutes for Biomedical Research (NIBR) is recruiting for a patent information professional proficient in biotechnology/sequence searching area to join the Search and Analytics (S&A) team.

You will join a global team of information professionals responsible for conducting comprehensive search and analysis of technical information in support of our research activities, patent preparation and prosecution as well as business development activities. Primary responsibility will be to provide search and analysis to support patentability, freedom to operate, due diligence and validity analysis to the patent practitioners.

MAJOR ACCOUNTABILITIES:

1. Conduct patent search and analysis, resulting in the timely delivery of value added search reports based on in-house established protocols

2. Perform comprehensive landscape, freedom to operate, novelty, validity and infringement searches in worldwide professional patent and scientific literature databases related to biopharmaceuticals and small molecule therapeutics

3. Evaluation of the results according to scientific and patent relevant criteria

4. Manage the development and timely delivery of current awareness alerts in support of active research programs based on in-house established protocols

5. Maintain proficiency with commercial patent resources and other proprietary databases

6. Consistent communicate with the NIBR practitioners to insure a clear understanding of the scope of the request and draft informative reports that clarify and summarize search results

7. Create and maintain a strategic partnership with key stakeholders in NIBR

8. Participate in and lead projects to improve NIBR S&A team services and products

9. Attend internal and external meetings, conferences and courses

10. Liaise with other groups (Novartis Knowledge Center and Patent Searcher Cooperative) to insure that effective knowledge sharing occurs

EDUCATION:
• Bachelor degree in Biology, Molecular Biology, or related scientific discipline is required
• Advanced degree (MS or PhD) in a life science is preferred

EXPERIENCE:
• 3-5 years of related experience is required, and preferably in the pharmaceutical/ biotechnology industry

• Proficient searching experience, including patent, pharmaceutical, biological sequence searching (BLAST)

• Understanding of the drug development and approval process

• Demonstrated proficiency in conducting comprehensive and focused patent searches (e.g., patentability, freedom-to-operate, novelty, validity)

• Demonstrated proficiency using online databases (e.g. GenomeQuest, CAS Registry/HCAplus, Derwent Geneseq, Derwent World Patent Index, and PatBase), internet resources, specialized information tools (e.g., STN Express, BizInt), chemical coding (e.g., Derwent fragmentation codes) and patent classification systems

• Good understanding of US/EP and international patents, patent process, documentation and filing process
