Job Description

The HSE Specialist provides technical expertise in all areas of health, safety and environment. Responsible for the development, promotion, implementation and evaluation of our Integrated Management System (which covers the HSE Safran Standards thus meeting the requirements outlined in ISO 45001, ISO 14001 and AS9100).

 Develops, implements and maintains company HSE policies and procedures adhering to local, provincial and federal HSE regulations and the Safran Standards

 Provides technical expertise in the design and development of facilities, work areas and safe work procedures and makes HSE recommendations accordingly

 In conjunction with Managers, conducts risk assessments & job safety analysis ensuring Safran standards met. Recommends/implements effective corrective actions to mitigate occupational HSE risks

 Leads the implementation and continuous improvement of Safran HSE standards; manages the creation & implementation of the local HSE improvement plan

 Monitors the safe removal / disposal of physical, biological and chemical hazards

 Monitors and ensures company fully compliant with relevant HSE legislation, rules and regulations, Safran requirements, and any other requirements.

 Serves as main contact with all HSE federal, provincial, and local regulatory bodies and maintains compliance with governmental agencies (including gathering data, analysis, interpretation & preparing Government technical reports as required)

 Develops & implements the HSE management system (incident reporting, risk analysis, analyzes performance & existing trends) ensuring it meets the Company's requirements & improves safety records. Advises management & assists in developing corrective actions to address any negative trends

 Ensures monthly HSE KPI's are completed & communicated & that all necessary records are maintained / information is tracked according to established guidelines for reporting purposes (e.g. metal waste, hazardous waste, freight etc.)

 Designs & implements a program to reduce accidents, occupational illnesses, and exposure to long-term health hazards through safety-training of all managers, planned inspections, skills training, first aid care, emergency preparedness, proper job instruction, new employee orientation, physical protection, job observation, rules & practices, job analysis/procedures, disposal procedures & PPE etc.

 Provides a wide range of services such as lockout/tagout, machine guarding, confined space entry, ergonomics, PPE, fire safety, chemical, contractor safety, hearing conservation, GHS,

 Manages a wide variety of environmental programs/initiatives (e.g. regulatory submissions (e.g. NPRI), waste management planning & design, site assessments, TRA, energy reduction)

 Proactively resolves complex problems through effective interaction at various levels

Complementary Description

 Develops and delivers compliant HSE education/training programs and materials. Trains employees on HSE policies, procedures & regulations. Maintains the HSE training matrix & assists in identifying potential training gaps of employees

 Ensures thorough accident investigations are conducted and recommendations implemented promptly. Identifies root causes of past accidents and proposes action plans.

 Conducts occupational H&S pre-qualification reviews on new or modified processes, equipment, chemicals to anticipate hazards. Defines environmental considerations for new equipment/tool purchases and completes the risk assessment of new and existing equipment and processes.

 Coaches and guides the JHSC in proper functioning.

 Promotes an HSE culture where employees are actively involved in HSE by creating & implementing campaigns/programs with aim of engaging employees (HSE week, earth days etc.)

Job Requirements

Skills and Core Competencies:

Strong customer service, presentation and training skills.

Excellent problem solving & analytical reasoning

Strong interpersonal skills, particularly conflict resolution, at all organizational levels including third party clients and contractors

Good organizational skills including the ability to adeptly prioritize and meet strict deadlines.

Proven ability to act as a team player in a collaborative environment

Motivated self-starter who is known for continuously improving the HSE system.

Keen attention to detail

Education and/or Certifications: Post Secondary School Degree in Occupational Health and Safety or Environmental Engineering/Environmental Sciences or related field.

Professional certification preferred (CRSP, CSP, CPE) or eligibility for certification and evidence of significant progress towards completion.

Work Experience: 5-8 years HSE experience in a fast paced manufacturing environment, Environmental Compliance Approval (ECA) experience. Knowledge of federal, provincial & local HSE regulations & experience in ISO 14001, ISO 45001, AS9100

Specialized Knowledge:

Strong and demonstrated knowledge of and ability to interpret applicable codes, standards, guidelines and all relevant government legislation related to HSE

Intermediate knowledge of Microsoft office products (outlook, word, excel & powerpoint)

Strong influencing skills

Demonstrated ability to effectively lead, manage and motivate others to make changes within a manufacturing environment and work with all levels of the organization

Communication Skills

Internal: Excellent communication skills (verbal & written) required, ability to draft & develop effective memos and presentations

External: Ability to liaise with external service providers
