Job description

Graduate Management Trainee

The Fuel Trading Company is the parent company to Portland Fuel, a specialist oil trading company based in York, England. Our international business has a turnover of £20m per annum and we are widely recognised as a leading niche player within the downstream oil industry. We are seeking motivated generalists to join our business, and graduates who are in the early stages of their career (or those students who are looking to work from October 2015) are invited to apply.

This is an excellent career development opportunity and will suit someone who enjoys a challenge, has the drive to graft their way up through an organisation and is not frightened of rolling their sleeves up and "getting on with it". On the successful completion of the training programme, the candidate will be appointed to a Managerial position.

In the first phase of employment (3 years), the successful candidates will fulfil a selection of roles - each one lasting 6 months before a new "placement" is undertaken (thus giving a total of 6 different placements). Candidates should expect at least one of the placements to be based at either our German or Belgian offices.

The exact range of roles will be tailored according to business needs and will constantly change (as would be expected in an entrepreneurial business) but will typically be in the following areas.

- Sales (Business Development, customer visits and tele-selling)

- Marketing strategies and market research

- Data analysis and report writing

- IT, website and telecoms administration

- Accounts administration and daily cash balancing

- Credit management and debt chasing

- Office management

- Executive Assistant role to Directors

- Daily oil pricing, market quotations and exposure calculators

- Database management

- Organisation and attendance at sales conferences and exhibitions

The role is vastly varied and will give excellent experience of a wide range of our business activities. Full training and support will be provided from both internal and external parties. We have an in house training co-ordinator who will be responsible for structuring your personal development and we routinely use a dedicated external performance coach. There will be frequent travel around the UK, regular communication with our international colleagues and occasional European / North American business trips.

While fulfilling these responsibilities during the placement period, we will work together to identify a path for career development within the company. Longer-term options include the following:

- Portland Fuel Price Protection; development of our international fuel hedging business

- Portland Fuelcards; development of our physical fuel supply business (selling diesel across the UK)

- Portland Analytics; in-depth energy analysis and market reporting for plc customers

- Portland CSO Trading Ltd; working with Oil Stock Holders as part of our European Oil Stocking business

- Group Accounting; responsible for our monthly £1.5m - £2.0m turnover plus Company Secretarial duties (tax, payroll, insurance)

- Trading; Buying / Selling of refined petroleum products, Government stock tickets, futures and options

- Operations; responsible for the safe and optimised delivery of 8m litres of petroleum products and derivatives per month

Candidates should be able demonstrate excellent communication skills, superior organisational ability and a "can-do" attitude. An engrained sense of entitlement are most definitely not welcome and you will be expected to carry out every job with equal enthusiasm - whether that is taking the bins out or preparing a speech on oil markets for the European Parliament.

Linguists (German, French, Italian, Spanish and Portuguese) are particularly encouraged to apply.

We welcome applicants based within a 20/25 mile radius of York or those willing to move to our beautiful and cosmopolitan city.

Closing date for applications is September 30th 2015.
