Job description

about the role

#Research #mobile innovation #european collaborative projet #signal processing

The mission of the intern is to conduct a research work on the « Waveform Design and Resource Allocation in ISAC systems »

Global context
Integrated Sensing and Communication (ISAC) has emerged as a transformative concept in the evolution of next-generation wireless networks, particularly with the advent of 6G. By merging communication and sensing functionalities into a unified system, ISAC enables efficient use of wireless resources while enhancing both data transmission and environmental awareness. This dual functionality is poised to play a critical role in various applications, such as autonomous driving, smart cities, and environmental monitoring.

In ISAC systems, one of the key challenges lies in the inherent tradeoffs between communication and sensing performance. For example, improving communication capacity might reduce the accuracy and resolution of sensing, and vice versa. Addressing these tradeoffs is essential for optimizing system performance, especially when it comes to metrics such as communication capacity versus sensing accuracy. Consequently, two major challenges have been identified in ISAC: waveform design and resource allocation. Both are critical to ensuring that ISAC systems can meet the demands of future networks.

Scientific objectives
The objective of this internship is to investigate two fundamental problems in ISAC systems: waveform design and resource allocation. The intern will focus on exploring the potential of 5G New Radio (NR) reference signals for sensing, given their promising characteristics for sensing activities.

The first task will involve a detailed study of the various types of 5G NR reference signals and the existing state-of-the-art solutions in this domain. Based on these findings, the intern will propose novel waveform designs that balance the tradeoffs between communication and sensing performance.

The second task will be to investigate resource allocation strategies that optimize system performance in ISAC environments. This will include a detailed analysis of how resources such as power and spectrum can be distributed between communication and sensing tasks to maximize efficiency.

The validation of the proposed solutions will be carried out through simulations (e.g., MATLAB). The results will contribute to ongoing research in ISAC and may be highlighted in scientific publications and/or patents.
