Worksite Engineer – Decommissioning
Hours: 37.5 hours
Location: Abingdon, Oxfordshire.
Hybrid working: 4 days in the office ,1 day remote.  
Arrangement: Permanent.

BPSS clearance will be required at basic level. Prior clearance will not be transferable.


Job Purpose: 


The Worksite Lead Engineer is a key technical role to lead teams (through actions) where the incumbent is responsible for delivering safe, compliant, and efficient engineering solutions for decommissioning activities through the pre-construction and construction phases. This role reports to the JDR Decommissioning Lead Engineer;

  • Own and drive the engineering aspects of decommissioning worksite investigations, surveys, research(discovery), hazard identification, inventory, deplanting methodologies and planning.
  • Ensure all engineering work complies with applicable regulatory, legal, and UKAEA JDR processes.
  • Identify hazards, assess risks, and implement mitigation strategies throughout the lifecycle of decommissioning projects
  • Reaching and deep knowledge of decommissioning strategies
  • Interface with the Principal Contractor and Contractors where necessary.

Responsibilities: 

  • Lead optioneering and feasibility studies within worksite constraints to identify viable decommissioning approaches.
  • Develop and maintain multi-phase decommissioning plans, including Post[1]Operational Clean Out (POCO) and deplanting strategies.
  • Oversee input data collection, conditioning, and validation to support accurate planning and decision-making.
  • Create decommissioning flow diagrams and throughput models to optimize sequencing and resource allocation.
  • Plan and coordinate investigations and characterisation activities to inform decommissioning design and hazard management.
  • Develop detailed plans for deplanting, size reduction, and associated engineering design activities.
  • Support hazard identification processes, maintain the Hazard Register, and ensure alignment with SHE requirements.
  • Prepare method statements, designer risk assessments, Pre-Construction
    Information (PCI), and support Construction Phase Planning (CPP).
  • Prepare for and present at design and gate reviews, ensuring compliance with technical and safety standards.
  • Interface with principal designer and contractor teams, managing interactions with health physics, waste, asbestos, and other stakeholders.
  • Provide expert advice to resolve delivery obstacles using creative solutions, lessons learned, and best practices.
  • Collaborate with the JDR Decommissioning Lead Engineer to define engineering strategy, reach back for lessons learned, and mentor other teams as required.

Desired profile

Essential Experience & Qualifications: 

  • Relevant engineering degree (BSc/MSc) or equivalent.
  • Chartered Engineer status with a recognized professional institution or significant experience in similar decommissioning roles.
  • Familiarity with CDM regulations and their implementation.
  • Strong understanding of design standards and UK compliance requirements.
  • Knowledge of Health and Safety at Work etc. Act 1974
  • Working knowledge of a broad range of engineering disciplines
  • Familiarity with industry-standard information management systems used in decommissioning.
  • Proven track record delivering engineered solutions in decommissioning or waste management projects.
  • Experience managing highly complex technical projects, including risk mitigation.
  • Demonstrated ability to act as a technical lead, including coaching and mentoring.
  • Experience supervising staff and ensuring adherence to safety and design standards.
  • Strong communication and technical writing skills.
  • Excellent interpersonal skills for stakeholder engagement.
  • Ability to influence and lead teams effectively.
  • Proactive approach to safety and problem-solving

  • D1: Discovery & Initiation Phase (3-4months)
  • D2: Pre-Construction Phase Engineering (4-6 months)
  • D3: Construction Phase (Nominal 9-18 months)
  • D4: Problem-Solving & Knowledge Transfer (Continuous)
