Senior Mechanical Engineer

Location: Hinton House, Birchwood Park, Risley
Work arrangement: Hybrid, 3 days per week in the office
Capacity to support office based working arrangement for of up to 5 days per week (Typically a blended working arrangement, 3/2 Office/WFH based on work demand and by agreement with manager)
Arrangement: Permanent or Contract (Inside IR35)

BPSS clearance will be required at basic level. Prior clearance will not be transferable.
The Sellafield Product & Residue Store (SPRS) Retreatment Plant (SRP) Project will provide a facility that receives Special Nuclear Material (SNM) from existing stores across the Sellafield site and processes it into a form suitable for safe and secure storage until 2120. This is a national strategic asset. This new Retreatment Plant project will make Sellafield safer sooner by;
- Safely receiving all SNM packages from their current storage locations.
- Retreating and/or repackaging those packages into 100-year packages.
- Transferring the new 100-year packages to the Sellafield Product & Residue Store (SPRS); and
- Enabling all SNM to remain safe and secure in this Store – into the next century and beyond.
The SRP project is currently in the execution phase which incorporates procurement, design, manufacture, works test, installation, and commissioning. This role is required to provide both design support activities to the supply chain, along with completion of outstanding design scope from earlier project phases. Furthermore, the role will include overseeing implementation of formal Design Change.
Key Responsibilities
- Planning and co-ordinating engineering and design activities.
- Developing and implementing engineering solutions for complex engineering projects, from concept design proposals through to design for manufacture, the full project life cycle.
- Identifying design, statutory and regulatory requirements, and contributing to risk assessments.
- Supporting resolution of conflicting design requirements.
- Producing technical reports, technical specifications and scoping calculations.
- Reviewing technical deliverables, including reports and drawings.
- Presenting engineering solutions to stakeholders and as part of design reviews.
- Delivering your scope of work to time and budget.
Desired profile
Qualifications/Skills
Essential Skills:
- Proficient in the use of MS Office and Outlook IT.
- Experience in the use of 3D CAD System (e.g., Inventor, Solid Works Pro E or similar).
- Experience in the use of 3D CAD Management System (e.g., Autodesk Vault, PDM or similar).
- Familiar with 2D drawing standards and GPS ISO (BS 8888).
- Experience in managing and directing designers in delivery of mechanical plant and equipment drawings and documents.
- Experience in prioritising work to support manufacturer schedules
- Experience and working knowledge of plant layout, set up, installation and alignment of plant and equipment and machinery for works test, integrated test and site installation.
- Experience in writing & checking works test requirement documentation and Integrated works test documents for Plant, Equipment and machinery. Interaction with CE&I engineers will be required to ensure complete multi-disciplinary interactions are addressed.
- Experience in Writing and checking O&M manuals
- Experience in providing support to resolution of manufacturing, inspection and test Technical Queries/production permits/concessions. Note: SME support for materials, welding NDT and design for manufacture will be made available.
Desirable Skills:
- Experience in the use of Auto desk inventor.
- Experience in the use of Auto desk vault Basis or Vault Pro (file management).
- Experience in production and checking of Design justification reports (DJRs)
- Experience and working knowledge of safety cases
- Awareness and experience or working with SL Engineering Standards and Specifications
- Retrieval of information from DM desktop and other record management systems
- Experience in designing in a nuclear environment
- Experience in Alpha glovebox design principals for containment
- Experience in design and integration of machines in accordance with the SoMSR
- Experience and working knowledge of CDM, SoMSR, PUWER & LOLER
- Capacity to travel outside of the UK to support manufacture and test of equipment for short durations (up to 1 week stay per visit).
