Job Description

Position Purpose
About Chemical & Analytical Development, work in a Chemical Development Unit: The Chemical & Analytical Development (CHAD) serves the interests of Novartis through timely supply of synthetic active pharmaceutical ingredients for clinical and development needs, with responsible process and analytical R&D leading to successful regulatory approval, launch and commercialization.

CHAD associates develop and utilize appropriate methodologies to manufacture and analyze bulk pharma chemicals in a safe, efficient, cost-effective, environmentally responsible, and GMP-compliant fashion and through application of expertise in chemistry, engineering and Technical Life Cycle Management.
One of three Chemical Development Units based on the Basel Campus is looking for an independent and motivated, degree-level educated scientist with proven experience in liquid chromatography analytical method development coupled with Mass Spectrometry and other non-UV based detection systems to join the Analytical Team.

Major Accountabilities
• This role has a specific focus on the use of a systematic approach for robust method development applications and the ability to drive this process to support efficient process know-how and timely clinical supplies.
• You will be responsible for the development and optimization of robust liquid chromatography analytical methods aimed at the quantification and identification of by- and degradation products in raw materials, intermediates and active pharmaceutical ingredients.
• You will operate and maintain chromatography devices coupled with non-UV detection systems (e.g. MS, CAD, ELSD) and will be responsible for setup and maintenance of the assigned laboratory infrastructure and equipment.
• You will document the data generated and provide summaries in appropriate formats for upload into the respective proprietary Novartis databases (laboratory journals and method development reports).
• You will work closely with analytical and process development chemists as well as scientists from a diverse range of disciplines within Chemical and Analytical Development.
• Other requirements include a strong technical-scientific background, good understanding of GMP, excellent communication skills and the ability to work independently in a team environment.

Desired profile

A MS degree (eventually a BS would be considered) in chemistry or chemistry related field with track records on LC-MS and fast HPLC methodologies. Alternatively, at least 3 years equivalent on-the-j Excellent command of English (spoken and written) required, German may be of advantage
• Candidate must have in-depth experience with HPLC, UHPLC and ideally GC chromatographic systems coupled with MS detection and a sound understanding of organic chemistry and chromatography, along with the interest in growing scientifically.
• Strong technical skills are required especially in the operation and maintenance of instrumentation and software.
• Additionally the candidate must have the ability to multitask, support several parallel projects, and communicate with analytical chemists and scientists at all stages of the project.
• Also required are strong data analysis, interpretation, and documentation skills. Specific experience in operating Empower and Chromeleon software, CAD or ELSD detectors, and GC-MS systems would be desirable.
• Strong interpersonal skills are essential. Also desirable is basic understanding of GMP as well as experience in pharmaceutical early development activities.
