Job Description Location: North England, North East & Scotland The Medical Science Liaison (MSL) is a field based, non-promotional medical and scientific role. Their key objective, as a member of the Medical Department is to interface with external healthcare professionals (HCPs) such as clinical investigators, disease area experts, decision makers, so as to communicate evidence based critical scientific, medical, technical and developmental issues. Within this role, the associate works with HCPs utilising scientific exchange to improve patient care solutions, based upon sound scientific, medical and pharmaceutical evidence. All exchanges must be scientifically up to date, balanced and of a non-promotional nature. Activities may include: • Development of partnerships with investigators, opinion leaders and healthcare professionals through: • Scientific, evidence based communication and education • Clinical trial activities • Investigator-initiated studies (IITs) • Scientific projects & research • Publications (abstracts, posters, case studies and peer reviewed papers) • Scientific support to marketing teams and their programmes, • Input and/or attendance at medical educational programmes, advisory boards, trainings. Major Accountabilities Healthcare Professional Partnerships and Scientific exchange 1. Establish and manage scientifically based relationships with clinical investigators, HCPs and other stakeholders including, but not limited to, key research and educational institutions, hospitals, networks, physician organisations and payers. 2. Provide scientific information to relevant HCPs, speakers & investigators on data as appropriate. 3. Facilitate and maintain legitimate scientific exchange related to Novartis compounds and pipeline with Medical Experts speakers and investigators to advance understanding of new scientific principles, research trends and current scientific debate. 4. Provide scientific and educational information to HCPs on specific patient critical issues, including medical education and support on Risk Management Plans (RMP) where appropriate. Internal Novartis Leadership 1. Provides proactive support for PDTs & IBTs in providing deep market and clinical understanding of pipeline therapeutic areas. 2. Gathers external insights and utilises insights to shape Novartis product strategy. 3. Collaborates with Novartis colleagues to gather, analyse and report insights from all legitimate sources that may impact Novartis developmental plans, trial designs, launch strategies, current brand strategies and tactics. 4. Builds and maintains close cross functional working with medical colleagues and Sales and Marketing colleagues. 5. Ensures that their time and activities are fully aligned to and focussed on delivering the Therapeutic Area Medical Plan. 6. Acts as a field-based reference point for non-promotional scientific and clinical expertise to field force and encourage self-sufficiency in the field force where feasible. 7. Internal discussions and leadership related to Clinical Trials feasibility and site recommendations. Clinical Trials and Pre-study support 1. Identifies and tracks potential research opportunities that are closely aligned with Novartis molecule development objectives through facilitating Clinical Research (e.g. non-interventional studies, registries, epidemiology projects, preclinical or translational research) as agreed by Medical TA Head. Responsible for milestone delivery in supported research projects. 2. Proactively develops scientific research concepts and ideas with investigators that deliver new data to enhance Novartis product profile. 3. Provide study and site level feasibility and research site recommendations. 4. Provide strategic support during entire trial process to support study and patient accrual as appropriate, and manage the investigator relationship. Corporate Image, Integrity & Compliance 1. Ensures that prevailing legislation, GCP, Ethical Committee, SOP, local WP requirements, and ABPI Code of Practice requirements are fulfilled. 2. Operates with integrity and proactively contributes to a credible image for the Novartis CPO in the local Health Care and Medical & Scientific community. 3. Adheres to Novartis Code of Conduct (NP4)
Desired profile
Desirable: Medical Doctor or PhD degree in Health Sciences Minimum: Masters' degree or equivalent in Health Sciences or if in other scientific fields and/or significant medical affairs/clinical experience. Experience: 1. Ideally an MSL should be either medically qualified or a qualified pharmacist or possesses a PhD qualification (scientific/medical background) or - possesses a scientific qualification with significant medical/clinical experience. 2. The ability to understand, process, communicate and present scientific information to a high standard. Possess excellent presentation skills. 3. Demonstrate an ability to be accountable for all scientific and clinical activities undertaken with a respective clinician, developing an appropriate strategic plan for these activities. 4. External customer focus with strong networking capabilities and integration with KOLs 5. Understanding of Pharma Industry ways of working. 6. Understanding of clinical development and Good Clinical Research Practice preferred. 7. Excellent influencing, networking, presentation and communication skills and a proven track record of team cross-functional team working. 8. Ability to manage multiple projects and adapt priorities according to business and strategic needs. 9. The highest ethical standards, with a working knowledge of relevant clinical regulations and industry standards including Good Clinical Research Practice, and ABPI Code of Practice. .
