Novartis Institutes for BioMedical Research (NIBR) is looking for an independent degree-level educated research scientist with strong expertise in laboratory automation systems to join the alternative technologies & robotics group within the discovery technologies unit at Novartis Biologics Center (NBC).

You will be responsible for conducting state-of-the-art high throughput screening experiments on highly customized automation solutions from Beckman Coulter, Tecan and other major solution providers. You will develop, implement and maintain complex automated setups and provide appropriate technical support, troubleshooting and process optimization. Furthermore, you will actively contribute to new automation strategies to enhance our automated drug discovery platforms and explore solutions improving our processes.

Specifically, main accountabilities will include:

• Develop, optimize, implement and maintain complex laboratory automation platforms.
• Troubleshoot and optimize current setups with focus on quality, reliability and throughput
• Provide support to screening scientists on use, maintenance, and protocol transfer
• Conduct screening campaigns on laboratory automation systems
• Analyze and review experiment data, integrate results in data management system
• Work in close collaboration with the team and other groups, and make decisions based on training, experience and knowledge

Desired profile

Minimum requirements

• University degree (MSc/BSc) or equivalent higher education in Biology, Biochemistry, Biotechnology or another relevant discipline
• Several years of postgraduate work experience with automated liquid handling systems in a research environment
• Strong expertise in laboratory automation systems from Beckman-Coulter, Tecan, and other major laboratory automation solution providers
• Documented experience with daily maintenance, troubleshooting and support of the automation equipment
• Proven experience in the development, implementation, optimization and validation of automation protocols
• Demonstrated ability to independently identify and implement process improvements
• Familiarity with standard molecular biology and cell culture techniques
• Good understanding of data analysis tools such as KNIME, R, Spotfire
• Good knowledge of programming languages and relational databases
• Experience with LIMS and data management systems is considered beneficial
• Independent self-starter, creative/innovative, with focus on precision and reliability
• Pronounced costumer and solution orientation, eager to provide constant and high quality support
• Clear and continuous communication, strong team player, demonstrating mutual respect
• Fluent English; additional language skills in German are beneficial
