Background
A great opportunity has arisen for a full time animal trainer within our Behaviour and Training Team at WALTHAM. This purpose of this role is to deliver the highest standards of animal training and enrichment as well as ensuring the Waltham Pet population is fully enabled to deliver the research programmes whilst being in line with our Caring Science approach.
The successful applicant can expect to develop their expertise in animal training, animal welfare and behaviour. Partnering with associates, contractors and experts across multiple teams to deliver on fast paced and diverse projects in support of global Mars Petcare brands
What you will do:
The successful Applicant will:
· Deliver training to pets of all species (canine and feline), ages and breeds to take part in our research.
· Deliver life and core skill training to kittens and puppies.
· Accurately record relevant data for measuring training progress in relevant data bases.
· Identify new behaviours of our pets that open up research opportunities in line with the WALHAM Caring Science Approach and develop training protocols to enable these.
· Train and support associates and contract staff in animal training, animal handling and husbandry
· Implement animal welfare and behaviour programmes
· Act as a source of expertise in animal training and behaviour
What we want from you:
Education
· A good general education (grade C or above in GCSE or equivalent in maths, English and a science) is essential.
· A higher/professional qualification(s) (e.g. A-level, HND) is desirable.
· A relevant degree, e.g. a BSc in Animal Behaviour or any other animal based qualification is preferable
Knowledge/Experience
· An excellent working knowledge of learning theory and principles of animal training is essential.
· An excellent understanding of feline and canine communication and behaviour is essential.
· Practical experience of training animals is essential.
· A flexible working style, good communication and planning and organisation skills and proven ability to work in a team are all essential.
· Good numeracy, attention to detail and computer literacy is essential to enable the data collection and data handling required of the role.
