JOB SUMMARY

As a member of an 8 to10 person agile scrum team, the Senior Systems Engineer (SSE), with database administrator, will drive the delivery of virtualization, compute, storage, middleware, database, and tooling infrastructure that drive Marriott’s business applications. The SSE/DBE serves as a subject matter expert and partners with business, technology leaders, architects, and other engineers across department release trains and other disciplines to engineer modern solutions along with the automation that will be used to deliver those solutions (aka deliver infrastructure as code), either in the data center or in the cloud. . Performs research, analysis, design, creation, and implementation of systems to meet current and future requirements while enabling customer facing and enterprise products/platforms. Provides solutions that serve our business leveraging current and leading-edge technologies in an innovative and impactful manner. 

 

CANDIDATE PROFILE

Education and Experience

Required:

·  Undergraduate degree in an engineering or computer science discipline and/or equivalent experience/certification 
·  7+ years' experience in technology infrastructure application delivery (operations) that includes: 
·  5+ years of experience with database platforms along with their high availability design implementations (listed in priority order):
·  RDBMS: Oracle, SQL Server, DB2 LUW, MySQL, Postgres, 
·  NoSQL: DocumentDB, Couchbase, Cassandra, Cockroach
·  Cloud Native DBaaS (e.g., AWS RDS)
·  ElasticCache (Redis)
·  3+ years of experience in Agile/DevOps methodologies
·  3+ years with Kubernetes (EKS, AKS, ACK, or OpenShift)
·  3+ years of experience with cloud technology and its concepts (AWS, Azure, and/or Alibaba) including networking, security, and IAM
·  3+ years’ Infrastructure and Configuration Management-as-Code Services
·  Terraform Enterprise, Vault Enterprise
·  Ansible or Ansible Tower
·  3+ years of experience with infrastructure automation through scripting with Python, Ruby, PowerShell, and/or UNIX scripting languages.
·  Networking fundamentals
·  Ability to independently research and recommend tools, software, applications, and systems for attaining best-in-class IT technology across the enterprise.
·  Ability to drive an idea or concept to an actual solution with significant autonomy. 
·  Ability to design highly resilient systems that support 99.9% uptime.
·  Ability to create constructive relationships, influence, and communicate (to project team, IT management, and non-technical staff).

 

Preferred:

·  Graduate Degree in Computer Science or Computer Engineering 
·  Experience with observability tooling:  Dynatrace APM & Grail, Splunk, CloudWatch, VPC Flow Logs
·  Experience with security tool integration and methods (e.g., SSO, MFA, WAM): Vault, Thycotic, Ping Access, PAM/SSSD, Waratek
·  Ransomware protection tools/methods
·  DevOps Tooling:  Helm, Harness, Backstage, Jenkins, Aqua
·  Confluent Cloud (Kafka)
·  Experience with some of these middleware products:  DataPower, MQSeries, MQ, JBoss, Tomcat, Apache Web, IBM Integration Bus (AppConnect)
·  One or more cloud certifications.
·  ITIL V4 foundation certification.
·  Excellent technical knowledge of current and emerging infrastructure systems and standards.
·  Project planning and management experience.
·  Excellent understanding of change management and testing requirements, techniques, and tools.
·  High availability and disaster recovery strategies and solutions.

CORE WORK ACTIVITIES

 

·  Serve as one of the department’s database platform technology SME’s.
·  Modernizing legacy IT systems
·  Produce Infrastructure as Code
·  Provide solutions to lift and shift legacy solutions into the cloud
·  Provide solutions to transform legacy solutions into cloud native solutions.
·  Provides technical expertise, oversight, standardization, and validation of the effectiveness of hardware and software infrastructure
·  Research, design, and engineer high-performing Infrastructure (as code) components that are standards-based, highly available and secured, delivering the required business functionality. 
·  Determines customer requirements and works with sourced resources to develop solutions 
·  Educates internal and external users of the technologies to continually improve the knowledge and skill-base of the organization on how best to operate and support the infrastructure services.
·  Provides documents with a focus on how services will be leveraged in the solution architecture.
·  Provides and presents status, analysis and reporting to internal stakeholders, Executive Management and Senior Leadership 
·  Trains and/or mentors other team members, and peers as appropriate 
·  Identifies opportunities to enhance the service delivery, operations and continual service improvement processes 
·  Develop implementation plans, test plans, and timelines for projects and tasks 
·  Participates in the evaluation and selection of technology products.
·  Institutes best practices and ensures proper alignment to projects and major initiatives.
·  Leads analysis of the current environment to detect critical deficiencies and recommends solutions for improvement.
·  Leads analysis of technology industry and market trends to determine the potential impact on existing and planned architectures.

·  Reviews vendor proposals and selects appropriate vendor for services/technologies/hardware. 
·  Thinks creatively and practically to develop, execute and implement new project plans.
·  Generates and provides accurate and timely results in the form of reports, presentations, etc.
·  Plans, develops, implements, and evaluates the quality of operations.

California Applicants Only : The salary range for this position is $96,038 to $209,169 annually.

Colorado Applicants Only: The salary range for this position is $96,038 to $190,154 annually.

Hawaii Applicants Only: The salary range for this position is $116,205 to $209,169 annually.

New York Applicants Only: The salary range for this position is $96,038 to $209,169 annually.

Washington, D.C. Applicants Only: The salary range for this position is $105,641 to $190,154 annually.

Washington Applicants Only: The salary range for this position is $96,038 to $209,169 annually. In addition to the annual salary, the position will be eligible to receive an annual bonus. Employees will accrue 0.04616 PTO balance for every hour worked and eligible to receive minimum of 7 holidays annually.
