Role: VAT Assistant Manager
Reporting to: Senior VAT Manager in Partnership Tax

KPMG’s Partnership Tax Team forms part of the UK firm’s in-house finance function, which is part of KPMG Business Services. The team is responsible for all aspects of the UK firm’s internal tax affairs, covering corporate tax, overseas tax, VAT, employment tax and the personal tax affairs of the partners.

Key responsibilities

The key responsibility of this role is to the support the Senior VAT Manager in ensuring the UK firm meets its VAT compliance obligations within the UK and across the rest of Europe.

Month end

- Review and sign off the month end files prepared by the VAT assistant
- Conduct structured sample analysis to verify the VAT liability of incoming and outgoing invoices
- Following the completion of the month end reconciliation, contact other KBS teams to notify them of any adjustments completed (if applicable) and educate them to reduce future reoccurances

VAT returns

- Prepare the VAT returns for final review by the Senior VAT Manager. This will consist of both the KPMG VAT Group and other single VAT registrations
- Ensure all VAT adjustments that are not posted but supplied within the VAT return periods are verified, accounted for and then posted to the respective VAT GL codes
- Identify any VAT errors in prior quarters that require notification to HMRC, including process changes that have been implemented to restrict future reoccurances
- Following the review by the Senior VAT Manager ensure returns are submitted and paid in advance of the due dates
- Following the submission of the VAT returns ensure all VAT ledgers are cleared in a timely manner and reflect the correct payment allocations by entity and VAT GL code
- Monitor the payments on acocunt schedule and ensure balances are settled in advance of the due dates

ECSL

- Review all ECSL and Intrastat returns that have been prepared by the VAT assistant and ensure balances reconcile to SAP
- Use the VIES tool to validate EU VAT numbers and where applicable, liase with client service teams to update invalid VAT numbers
- Prepare the ECSL return and schedule for upload onto the HMRC portal

Internal VAT helpline

- Respond to helpline requests in a timely manner
- Review and approve VAT rate changes on fee notes
- Authorise changes to billing parties after veryfing that contractual arrangements and the nature of KPMG’s supply support the change requests
Partial exemption and capital goods scheme

- Conduct monthly exempt fee reviews to ensure KPMG is applying the correct VAT treatment on it’s supplies
- Run annual partial exemption reports to assist the Senior VAT Manager in calculating the irrecoverable input VAT
- Assist the Senior VAT Manager in analysing the fixed asset schedule to identify items that qualify as capital items

Other

- Assist the Senior VAT Manager with the preapration and delivery of VAT workshops to other KBS teams
- Assist in the development and training of the VAT assistant
- Maintain an up to date schedule of reporting, payment and filing dates for all returns
- Verify and approve the VAT liability on sundry fee notes for non SAP automated invoices
- Handling any other ad hoc reviews and projects undertaken by the Partnership tax team

Experience and background

- Comfortable around the use of systems (SAP beneficial) and the ability to analyse large volumes of data accurately
- Highly numerate with strong oral and written communication skills
- Ability to work well within the tax team and wider finance function
- 3 years + experience in VAT (essential) with a reasonable understanding of partial exemption, capital goods scheme and rules surrounding the recovery of VAT on entertainment
