Job Description

Requisition ID: 2026190107

Currently, the QA Microbiology Team at McNeil Consumer Healthcare is looking to recruit a Microbiology Technician II for an 8-12 month (12 month preferred) position on our team. As a member of the QA Microbiology Team, the successful candidate will be able to take on increasing responsibility throughout the course of their work term(s) in support of all microbiology laboratory operations. In addition, the individual will be required to complete assigned projects in support of continuous improvement initiatives.

In the first semester, the student will be able to gain familiarity with basic processes and documentation at McNeil, learning about the product mix and being primarily responsible for organizing and preparing all microbiological reagents and culture media, as well as quality testing to challenge media growth performance and sterility prior to use in testing. In this role, students will become familiar with typical lab equipment including: autoclave, balances, pH meter, pipetting, incubators and the electronic laboratory notebook system.

Moving into the second semester, the student will be able to perform additional testing including purified water testing via membrane filtration and environmental monitoring of air and surfaces. This will give the student the opportunity to learn more about the manufacturing areas and become familiar with membrane filtration, use of air samplers, collection of contact plate and swab samples, and plate count processes. Additionally, it is expected that students in this semester will also assist in complete organism risk assessments related to isolates recovered from their testing and might get exposure to performing laboratory investigations.

Students who stay for a third semester will gain the most immersive experience, mastering skills learned in the first two semesters and support the lab with water activity testing, completing organism identifications through conventional colony and cell morphology, staining, and use of the automated Genetic Sequencing identification system.

Students able to stay for a 12-month term will be able to participate in a large scale project assigned based on business needs while those staying only for an 8-month term will be able to participate in a more moderate project. All students will write experimental protocols and reports in line with project goals and will be required to present on their project to their immediate team near the end of their term.

Throughout all terms at McNeil, students will be expected to:
·  Maintain detailed, accurate and up-to-date records of work performed using good documentation practices (GDPs).

·  Utilize aseptic technique and good laboratory practices (GLPs).

·  Follow Canadian Biosafety Standards and Guidelines for the handling of biological agents in a level 2 laboratory.

This assignment offers the opportunity to work in a challenging, fast-paced team environment in a state-of-the-art facility with on-site fitness centre, subsidized dining and company store. McNeil was recognized as the University of Guelph Co-op Employer of the Year for 2012 based on the strong mentoring and coaching present at the site. All students will be assigned to a training coordinator and will participate in site wide training, as well as a modular functional training program. As part of the coaching and mentoring available at the site, students will participate in team meetings, divisional meetings, site meetings, and various leadership training initiatives in order to develop leadership competency, exposure to management, and a big picture understanding of the issues and opportunities impacting their functional areas and the site as a whole. Finally, students will have the opportunity to participate in monthly “One to One” developmental conversations with their direct supervisor in order to discuss talent development, training goals, and career path.
