DePuy Synthes, a member of Johnson & Johnson's Family of Companies, is recruiting for a Drexel Product Development Co-op located in Westchester, PA to support the Surgeon Response Group.

The Depuy Synthes Trauma / CMF Research and Development (R&D) Team is focused on the development of innovative medical devices, including implants and instruments, for skeletal repair and reconstruction. The Surgeon Response Team is a group within R&D that is focused on developing patient-specific implants and customized instruments for skeletal reconstruction and repair, which meet the specified requirements of the surgeon, and addressing the specific needs of the patient.

The Surgeon Response Group Co-Op will lead and support the development of surgeon-specific devices based on specific requirements provided by the surgeon. This development will involve concept generation, computer-aided design, strength of materials and analysis, prototype fabrication and manufacturing process selection. The Co-Op will be responsible for following the work instructions specific for developing the custom and customized devices, and completion of all design deliverables, including design and functional requirements, verification and validation activities, and risk assessments. This work will involve some independent work, as well as collaborating with others from the team and other departments, such as manufacturing, quality assurance and regulatory. The Co-op will be assigned projects that can be initiated and completed within the 6 month term, allowing time for all necessary training or orientation.

Co-ops will be part of a structured co-op program, which consists of a formal mentoring program, visibility to upper management, professional training and networking opportunities.

This Co-op experience in developing customized medical devices offers the individual focused experience in the design and development of medical devices, in an environment that will allow them to quickly learn and contribute to the team. Each Co-op should expect to develop the following skills; the basic requirements for developing a medical device, concept generation and design selection, computer aided design, test methodologies and manufacturing processes, medical terminology and communication and collaboration and project management in a matrix, cross-function organization.

Successful candidates for this role possess high mechanical aptitude as well as strong problem solving and communication skills. Engineering students who like to “tinker” and/or work with their hands are preferred. Must have the ability to work independently with minimal supervision. Minimum GPA: 3.0

Co-op will maintain active, regular communication and involvement with internal and external project team members. The Co-op will maintain the highest levels of professionalism, ethics and compliance at all times.

These individual departmental openings provide Co-Ops with a six-month opportunity to become an integral part of their respective departments. Co-Ops must be able to work 40 hours a week.

Desired profile

Qualified candidates must be a current Drexel University Engineering student in good standing and enrolled in the Co-op program. We are looking for candidates pursuing a degree in Mechanical or Biomedical Engineering.

We are looking for candidates that are highly motivated and can work independently on one or multiple projects under general direction and can exhibit an attention to detail. Establish and foster collaboration and partnership internally and externally. Has a good sense of priorities and manages time accordingly. Has strong communication skills (written and verbal), including experience presenting in front of multidisciplinary audiences, and attending team meeting face to face and by teleconference. Knowledge and experience with Microsoft Office software is required as well as intermediate to advanced software skills with Microsoft Excel and PowerPoint is required.
