The Director, Global Public Affairs, Consumer will be responsible for the strategic planning, implementation and integration of impactful public affairs strategies for Johnson & Johnson's Consumer portfolio, including product transparency, environmental sustainability, and social impact initiatives that engage and build trust with multiple internal and external stakeholders. The role builds consumer trust, brand value, corporate equity, and company reputation through the integration of strategic and impactful public affairs initiatives social equity programs, leadership platforms and consumer education. The role contributes significantly to J&J Consumer's goal to meet consumer needs, and to improve consumer and stakeholder confidence in our company and our brands.

He/she will also be responsible for leading, inspiring and driving collaboration across a high-performing, highly engaged team of cross-functional, cross-regional, and cross-sectoral colleagues and business partners that deliver for the Enterprise and our Consumer businesses and strengthens our Communications & Public Affairs function.

Responsibilities:

• Build an integrated, cross-functional team to support the development and implementation of strategic and impactful public affairs and leadership platforms that are integrated into the business to build trust with consumers and position J&J as a leader over time

• Guide development and implementation of initiatives that enhance J&J Consumer's value to consumers and contribute to a stronger reputation associated with the product transparency, environmental sustainability, and social impact of our personal care brands

• Build an internal coalition of support for this work, including colleagues representing Marketing, Sales, R&D, Scientific Affairs, Environmental Stewardship & Sustainability, Regulatory Affairs, Communications & Public Affairs, and Government Affairs & Policy, along with internal subject matter experts

• Guide internal planning and development of processes, infrastructure and investment required to deliver evidence-based data to inform compelling consumer-facing social equity narratives

• Partner with Marketing colleagues to integrate this work into future-forward global brand building initiatives

• Build stakeholder education and public affairs strategies, in partnership with regional Government Affairs & Policy and Public Affairs colleagues, to shape the external environment re: transparency issues important to J&J and the industry

• Develop thought leadership platforms and initiatives to elevate Johnson & Johnson as a social equity leader within the personal care industry over the next 3 years – engaging global and regional leadership as external spokespersons

• Identify, maintain and facilitate partnerships and projects with opinion leaders, public institutions, industry trade associations and other external stakeholders that contribute to a constructive social equity dialogue

• Work with Communications & Public Affairs colleagues (globally & regionally) to develop and implement strategic communication plans, projects and content to enhance employee understanding of Johnson & Johnson's key social equity commitments and actions related to personal care products; act as a driver of change, supporting related business initiatives with effective communication strategies and tactics

• Guide regional teams in developing relationships with top media, including key social media influencers, and other influential stakeholders with an interest in aspects of social equity

• Deploy global platforms; ensure knowledge transfer and best practice sharing across regions to leverage approaches developed for other markets

• Measure the effectiveness of social equity activities through feedback/measurement tools, explore best practices and adjust strategies accordingly

• Shape team approach to proactively drive business and Enterprise outcomes by identifying and applying key outcomes metrics to social equity practices, and provide insights that drive confidence, integration and alignment. Model close partnership with Strategy & Insights CoE in developing metrics and assessing impact

• Oversee budgets with the highest degree of fiscal prudence and responsibility

• Guide decisions that develop and enhance product transparency across J&J's portfolio of consumer health brands, contributing to business and Enterprise growth

• Serve as a senior counselor with leadership on matters of company investments, decisions and reputation

• Model and inspire integration of knowledge from deep internal and external networks; multi-stakeholder insights; and broad understanding of business, competitive and industry priorities in development and efficient implementation of strategic social equity plans that drive key business and reputation outcomes and shape the environment for the company's personal care product portfolio

• Maintain deep understanding of current issues in the environment affecting the reputation of the Enterprise, J&J Consumer and its brands; anticipate and guide team in addressing emerging market and internal realities

• Develop and strengthen relationships with and serve as trusted advisor to business leaders on matters related to social equity and reputation

• Coach senior leaders to develop their internal and external stakeholder engagement and internally drive a culture aimed at building trust and enhancing transparency

• Strengthen consumer and stakeholder trust through effective proactive mitigation and management of issues

• Ensure the team proactively identifies potential product transparency issues and risks, and develops issues management strategies and processes

• Ensure excellence in anticipating and managing situations that may impact stakeholder trust and company reputation

• Partner closely with global Consumer commercial functions and cross-sector Communications, Workforce Communication, Strategy & Insights, Environmental Stewardship & Sustainability, and other CoEs to ensure Enterprise alignment

• Lead collaboration across a high-performing, continuously improving team of global colleagues that makes our Enterprise and the GCPA function stronger.

• Engage a global network of J&J colleagues to bring J&J Consumer's product transparency strategy to life – delivering value to consumers, customers, and the business

• Lead change by modelling a proactive, open and progressive mindset and fostering a culture of responsiveness, agility and empowered action

• Collaborate closely with J&J Consumer's Global Policy Committee, Ingredient Steering Committee and Global Franchise Organization to deliver integrated transparency and social equity solutions

• Model and promote Our Credo and our Leadership Imperatives

• Model and lead with a One Team mindset to unify, collaborate and drive for best Enterprise outcomes; model collaboration across Communication, Sustainability, R&D and other teams in other sectors and COEs around the world

• Model and inspire a continuous improvement mindset to ensure J&J stays on the leading edge of transparency and social equity trends

• Develop and coach others in superior written, oral and visual communications in a variety of styles and formats

Desired profile

Qualifications :

• Minimum of a Bachelor's degree is required

• Advanced degree in Communications or related field is preferred

• Minimum of ten (10) years of experience managing complex communications and public affairs in a company, NGO, government agency or public relations agency is required

• Proven track record of successful corporate communication, public affairs, public relations, and/or brand building achievements is required

• Focus on innovative reputation-building and stakeholder engagement is required

• Demonstrated ability to lead, inspire, coach and partner with high-performing teams, both internal and external is required

• Demonstrated ability to build deep, authentic relationships and strong influence with senior internal and external stakeholders is required

• Knowledge of key social equity issues, norms and trends within the global personal care product sector, knowledge of other sectors (i.e. food) is preferred

• Knowledge of and established relationships within J&J Consumer's global ecosystem of external stakeholders with an interest in social equity (product transparency, environmental sustainability and social impact) is preferred

• Demonstrated ability to develop successful partnerships with top executives is required

• Proven project management skills are required

• Experience working in a highly-regulated industry (gas, pharmaceutical, financial, etc.) is preferred

• Extensive experience in crisis/issues management is required

• Outstanding strategic thinking and analytical ability is required

• Experience working in a matrixed environment and driving results through influence is required

• Extensive experience in managing budgets and resource allocation across large critical projects is required

• Exercise a high level of independent judgment even in challenging, complex situations is required

• This position is located in either New Brunswick, NJ or Washington DC and will require up to 25% of domestic and international travel
