R&D Procurement Category Manager – Clinical Development (Asia Pacific)-000010FSDescriptionSUMMARY:
- Scope and Objectives: The R&D Category Manager (CM) will be responsible for the management of R&D categories and sub-categories with a primary focus on the Clinical Development stage of R&D. This will include design, implementation & management sourcing strategies for the clinical development category and it’s associate sub-categories, key stakeholder management, supplier relationship management (SRM), project / trial sourcing execution of varied complexity (including running RFIs/RFPs, bid defenses, negotiation selection, contracting, follow-ups / maintenance); keeping up to date with spend trends and marketing intelligence and using relevant data to influencing key sourcing strategies and gaining buy-in, through proactive collaboration with key business partners and JRP Global Category Expects.
- Geography: The Category Manager will become responsible for the support of clinical development categories / sub-categories in Asia Pacific across the three J&J sector – Pharmaceuticals, Medical Devices, Consumer Healthcare.
PRINCIPAL RESPONSIBILITIES (And Indicative Percentage of Time):
- Category Leadership and Sourcing Strategy Development (20%-30%)
- Sourcing strategy development, shape business partner strategies and meet business needs through providing external market insights.
- Maintain best-in-class knowledge in order to initiate new techniques and procedures for continued efficiency, compliance and consistency.
- Ensure quality and compliance objectives through collaboration with corresponding Q&C organizations such as quality assurance, health care compliance, finance, IT, etc.
- Competitive Bidding: initiate and manage competitive bidding events with moderate complexity.
- Supplier Relationship Management (10%-20%)
- Take ownership of key Supplier Relationships including Portfolio Governance / Performance Management of key suppliers relationships within the region..
- Drive Regional / Local SRM for these suppliers under the J&J SRM framework, partner with key customers to address team support and performance issues with suppliers (including management of escalation pathways).
- Negotiation Leadership (10%-20%):
- Leads negotiations with suppliers in order to deliver greater value back to the business (higher value of services deliver per dollar spent), at the same time ensure a fair margin to our suppliers.
- Will do this through careful preparation, data analysis and modeling, and alignment of negotiation strategies with key business partners through collaboration.
- Project / Trial Execution:
- Development of supply/service agreements, negotiate and implement work orders, change orders and service agreements within category / sub-category.

- The CM would be expected to achieve this through data and analysis as much as possible and use sound judgment with qualitative data and always working to ensure bias is kept at bay, and always look to question the status-quo, welcome diverse ideas / opinions and facilitate a collaborative environment through active listening in order to ensure the best possible outcome.

- Will interface with several key clinical functional such are Global Clinical Operations (GCO), Medical Affairs, Quantitative Sciences (Data Management, BioStatistics and Programming, Medical Writing), Medical Safety, Regulatory Affairs, etc. Limited level of interface with certain commercial functions. Requirement level of interface with China R&D and Medical Affairs.
- Significant interactions with external environment, handling relationships with senior management of incumbent and non-incumbent suppliers.
- Will interface with many levels and functions within the J&J organization – with specific JRP category leads for understanding of the objectives of the function, to cascade that information to specific staff, as well as with support functions within JRP, as well as outside, such as Finance, Legal, HCC, HR.
- Must have a strong focus towards internal customers, including therapeutic areas, Centers of Excellence and other key business partners – so they have the support they require.
- Will be a key contact for External Service Providers (ESPs) looking to enhance their relationship within a specific functional area of the J&J R&D business.
- It is possible a person in this position will have the added role of a site point person for team members at their site / countryEDUCATION & EXPERIENCE REQUIREMENTS:
- Bachelors Degree in business, life sciences, or related field required; Masters / MBA / Other advanced Degree preferred.
- Strong Project Management and multi-stakeholder management experience with an ability to influence without direct line authority. Must have excellent communication and English language skills (bilingual in Mandarin is an advantage); be results oriented and customer-focused.
- Demonstrated advanced strategic procurement and negotiating experience of 3-5 years (6 to 8 years preferred). Experience as a user or provider of clinical outsourced services is an advantage.
- Experience in the healthcare / life sciences, clinical development / Clinical R&D procurement very highly preferred.
REPORTING RELATIONSHIPS, LOCATION, TRAVEL, EMPLOYEE STATUS, PAY GRADE:
- REPORTING: The CM will report to the Sr. Regional Sourcing Manager – Clinical Development.
- LOCATION: Shanghai / Beijing, China (Preferred); Alternative locations may be considered (Mumbai, Singapore, Seoul).
- TRAVEL: Up to 20% domestic / international travel.
