The Global Platform Principal Scientist conducts research directed toward discovery and/or development on a large research and development project or a number of small projects with many complex features under minimal supervision using established and novel technology.
The Principle Scientist is responsible for supporting contact lens product development from product feasibility through product definition and clinical validation. The primary objective will be to support a development strategy to ensure new product success along with quality and efficacy throughout the product development process. Specific responsibilities include new contact lens products as generated by the Platform teams.
Significant emphasis will be placed on generating fundamental relationships between contact lens fabrication, product characteristics, and patient experience that will be utilized in developing appropriate controls throughout the product lifecycle. This role will influence other leaders in R&D to meet product development objectives. The Principal Scientist will interface with Project Teams, Process Development, and Support Teams to develop controls to ensure product requirements are met. Adheres to environmental policy, procedures, and supports department environmental objectives. Engages in J&J Credo-based decision-making.
The Principal Scientist will conduct research of a highly complex nature where analysis of situations or data requires an evaluation of intangible variable factors. Contribute to the development of new principles and concepts. Exercise independent judgment in developing methods, techniques and evaluation criteria for obtaining results on new assignments. Ensure continuous improvement in the development of new or refined materials, processes, products and/or scientific procedures. Work toward predetermined long range, business strategies in creative and effective ways such as acquisitions and license decisions. Analyze data and complex situations involving the evaluation of tangible and identifiable variables to arrive at creative and effective solutions. Modify methodology to improve the quality, accuracy, and usefulness of data. Plan, discover and develop programs and originate, design or direct investigations.
QualificationsA minimum of a Bachelor’s degree or equivalent and 8+ years of experience in a relevant technical field (e.g. Physics, Chemistry or Biology) is required. A Master’s degree and 6+ years of experience or PhD and 4+ years of experience in relevant technical field (e.g. Physics, Chemistry or Biology) is preferred.
Strong business acumen and knowledge of contact lens products and competitive landscape is preferred. Experience with the application of principles, concepts and practices of medical device research is required. Experience and development of novel contact lens materials, designs and processes is highly preferred. Knowledge of Ocular & Clinical Science and Physiology is preferred. Proven leadership skills including motivating, negotiating and providing direction in a team environment is preferred. Demonstrated record of completing substantial technical projects is required. Ability to collaborate with internal and external resources to meet project objectives is required. Familiarity with statistical analysis and design of experiments is required. Strong analytical and problem-solving skills are required. Excellent communication, organizational, and interpersonal skills are required.
This position is located in Jacksonville, FL and requires up to 20% travel domestic and international.
