The Principal Scientist-Materials is to conduct research of complex nature in the areas of Chemistry, Biochemistry, Biology, Microbiology/Bacteriology, Research Pharmacy, Toxicology and Pharmacology. Specialist in Diabetes research and technologies involving insulin, insulin delivery, safety systems and the bio physics of insulin delivery. The Principal Scientist – Materials will independently evaluate the integrity of the product materials and insulin drugs of new and existing products, and perform testing on the Calibra mealtime patch insulin system. This individual will determine and develop approaches to solutions with technical guidance on simple and complex problems. He/she will present complex information in a simple way to educate and influence management and customers and also present to industry groups and professional associations. The Principal Scientist-Materials will lead technical discussions to understand varying viewpoints and negotiate actions. This individual will implement different ways to enhance sharing information, and write protocols, procedures, specifications, and publication quality reports and manuscripts in support of technology. The successful candidate will demonstrate full competence in all conventional aspects of the subject matter, functional area, and assignments. Under general supervision, this individual will carry out an important segment of a large or complex engineering program or a small program with limited complexity and scope. The Principal Scientist-Materials may hold responsibility for the management and development of other engineers, scientists or technicians. Lead projects and collaborate closely with cross-functional teams such as Operations, Manufacturing, Quality, and Regulatory to delivery on project commitments (quality, time and cost). Analyze data and complex situations involving the evaluation of tangible and identifiable variables to arrive at creative and effective solutions. Exercise independent judgment in selecting methods, techniques and evaluation criteria for obtaining results on new assignments. Make contributions to scientific literature and conferences. Evaluate the bio composition and processes of new and existing products (i.e. JJDS and non-JJDS Companion products) for compatibility and stability. Utilize experience from other areas of industry to solve issues with the current product portfolio. Use and understand advanced processes and techniques to evaluate the characteristics of materials. Test stability, durability and reliability of materials for specific uses. Advise others on most efficient materials to purchase. Help solve problems in the manufacturing process that arise with the use of different materials. Ensure products and its testing comply with national and international legal and quality standards. Manage the working partnerships with external resources/experts contracted for the concept, prototype, product development, and testing of the devices. May provide guidance and work direction to lower level engineers or scientists.
QualificationsA Bachelor Degree in Biochemistry, Materials or Engineering with 10+ years or an Advanced Degree in Biochemistry, Materials or Engineering with 7+ years of R&D experience in medical device or pharmaceutical products is required. A minimum of 3 years leading technical projects and/or Project Management experience is required. Experience in conducting research in an R&D environment or product development is required. Demonstrated high level of technical understanding. Experience with materials composition, biocompatibility and/or insulin stability is required. Experience with polymers, adhesive and packaging and their associated processes such as injection molding, extrusion, thermal welding is preferred. Supervisory experience of engineers, scientists or technicians is a plus. Experience with sterile consumable medical devices; such as devices that deploy drugs or blood products
- infusion sets, cartridges, patch or implantable pumps is a plus. Previous experience with commercialization of technologies is a plus. Strong understanding of medical device standards and regulations including FDA. Experience applying knowledge of GMP, design controls, IS013485, international environmental standards and regulations. Excellent problem solving, decision-making, and root cause analysis skills in addition to interpersonal skills that foster conflict resolution as it relates to technical situations are required. Ability to effectively communicate in English is required (written and verbal). Fluency in Spanish is preferred. Microsoft Office proficiency is required. Up to 25% travel time outside Puerto Rico.
