The Toxicology, Pathology and Laboratory Animal Medicine group within Preclinical Development & Safety of Janssen R&D is continuing to build key scientific expertise in mechanistic and in vitro toxicology, as well as capabilities in investigative toxicology, in order to optimally partner with therapeutic area scientists to develop transformational new medicines in Oncology, Immunology, Neuroscience, Cardiovascular & Metabolism and Infectious Diseases. We are looking for outstanding toxicologists to join our team to bring their expertise to exciting efforts in novel areas of drug discovery and development. We are currently seeking a Global Head of Mechanistic and Investigative Toxicology (MIT).The Global Head of MIT will report to the Vice President of Toxicology, Pathology and Laboratory Animal Medicine and will develop the strategic scientific vision for the group to ensure that robust and effective processes and infrastructure are in place to support the targets of Janssen’s five therapeutic areas (Oncology, Immunology, Neuroscience, Cardiovascular & Metabolism, and Infectious Diseases). Working closely with discovery toxicologists, as well as the Toxicology and Pathology groups and other groups within PD&S, the MIT group will help develop hypotheses for potential or identified toxicities and work in a collaborative manner to develop a plan to screen other compounds and conduct in vitro or in vivo studies to elucidate potential mechanisms and follow up strategies. The group will foster strong partnerships with therapeutic area program teams and others in Discovery Sciences and Preclinical Development & Safety to provide early compound toxicity profiles as well as innovative assays to deliver quality data in a timely manner. Novel screening methodologies will be developed internally and the group will partner with external collaborators in consortia, universities and CROs to ensure access to the latest technologies. The Global Head of MIT may be based in Beerse, Belgium or Spring House, PA, and will be responsible for MIT groups at these two sites as well as in La Jolla, CA. The Global Head will recruit, mentor, and develop outstanding scientists to create a culture of scientific excellence, innovation and collaboration. S/he will also be a key member of the Toxicology, Pathology and Laboratory Animal Medicine Leadership Team and contribute to the strategic direction of the larger Preclinical Development & Safety organization.
QualificationsA Ph.
D. in toxicology, genetic toxicology, pathology, biochemistry, or related biological fields is required. A medical degree, such as a D.V.M. or M.D. is preferredDiplomate of the American Board of Toxicology is preferredAt least 12 years of drug discovery and/or development experience with an outstanding track record of success in toxicology support for molecules in both early and late development is requiredA recognized international scientific expert in mechanistic toxicology, with a strong understanding of in vitro to in vivo translation of potential toxicitiesBroad background in novel methods of identifying potential toxicities and developing risk mitigation plans is requiredSuccessful background in developing and implementing screening strategies to support discovery portfolios at multiple sites is requiredDepth of experience in one of the following areas: in vitro screening methods, in vivo mechanistic study design and conduct, biochemistry, or cellular biology is requiredExtensive knowledge and experience in hit-to-lead and lead optimization activities, including medicinal chemistry, genetic toxicology, and ADME are requiredExperienced leader with reports in different areas of expertise and an effective communicator with senior management and collaborator with scientists in the therapeutic areas and Disease Area Leaders is requiredRecord of success in working effectively with multiple types of research organizations, including academic institutions, contract research organizations, and public-private consortia is requiredOutstanding written and oral presentation capabilitiesExperience in genetic toxicology, computational toxicology, phenomics and/or chemogenomics, mitochondrial toxicology, or organs on a chip are preferredDrug discovery experience in one or more of the following therapeutic areas: Oncology, Immunology, Neuroscience, Cardiovascular & Metabolism, and Infectious Diseases is preferredBE VITAL in your career.
