Duties & Responsibilities

What's the role about?

Waitrose & Partners publishes a portfolio of highly successful, highly profitable print titles, including Waitrose & Partners Food, Health and Drinks magazines, and - unique in the retail space - a weekly newspaper: Waitrose & Partners Weekend.

We pride ourselves on producing inspiring, persuasive and differentiated editorial that rewards and delights the Waitrose customer while profitably supporting the Marketing Plan and business objectives.

We are now seeking a News Editor to join the Waitrose & Partners Weekend team, which forms part of our best-in-class Content & Design department. Weekend delivers entertaining, enriching, informative content to our customers each week on areas including: the environment and sustainability; celebrity interviews; food and recipes; home and wellbeing; culture and sport; as well as the supermarket's own news and stories.

Job Requirements

What you'll be doing?

As the News Editor, you will commission and create relevant, topical and engaging content for the news pages of Weekend and related print and online marketing channels. Your content will deliver the Waitrose & Partners business objectives, reinforce brand values and support revenue growth.

You will have responsibility for managing a team of freelance contributors and regular columnists, and will set the agenda for the weekly news content in Weekend. You will be restless in your ambition to tell the stories, from both inside and outside of the business, that our customers want to read. You will know the Waitrose & Partners customer inside out, anticipating their needs and responding to their interests. You will have a brilliant contacts book, and connections across the media industry, to help you deliver this.

As the News Editor, you will be part of a close-knit editorial and design team that produces the paper entirely in-house. You will have had experience in - and enjoy the fast pace of - a weekly or daily news title that works to a rigorous schedule. The News Editor is at the heart of the business, liaising with multiple stakeholders to bring to life the brand story and our commercial and marketing initiatives, and as such you will be skilled at developing and maintaining strong working relationships. Working for a premium food retailer, you will have a passion for promoting quality food and the highest welfare standards, and you will constantly be looking to innovate in the way we communicate those messages.

In return, we can offer you a brilliant opportunity to become a co-owner in our forward-thinking business, and the chance to join a talented, supportive and creative team.
