Departmental description: The J.P. Morgan South Africa and sub-Saharan Africa (SSA) Corporate Finance Advisory team is responsible for execution of public and private M&A transactions involving corporate and financial sponsor clients based in sub-Saharan Africa. We maintain leading relationships with some of the most prominent clients across the SSA region and aid them in delivering on their corporate strategy and structure.
Our Investment Banking groups are organized to provide product, industry sector or country expertise to our clients. These teams collaborate to provide a variety of products to clients in each sector. The team members become experts in their product, industry sector or country.
As a member of the SSA corporate finance advisory team, you will work as part of a team on projects involving various types of transactions across industry groups.
The SSA team is based in Johannesburg, South Africa.
Job Summary: Assist in origination and execution of public and private mergers, acquisitions and divestitures across all industry sectors, equity capital markets advisory on various types of capital raising transactions such as listings, rights issues across sub-Saharan Africa together with other bankers from the SSA team, as well as colleagues from industry, country and other product teams in other geographies.
Core Responsibilities:
• Day-to-day management of projects:
- Liaise with the relevant counterpart at the client and other advisers (accounting, legal etc.)
- Coordinate project deliverables and timetable with other advisers
• Liaise with other team members, industry coverage bankers and other product partners to deliver the firm to our clients
• Preparing presentation materials and participating in deal pitches
• Building of complex valuation models and other analytical exercises
• Performing financial valuation, discounted cash flow and multiples-based analyses
• Conducting industry and product research
Desired profile
Required Experience:
• Prior experience in an Investment Bank either in M&A, an industry group or leveraged finance (essential)

Financial Performance / Technical Skills
• Outstanding financial analysis and modelling skills (essential)
• High level of attention to detail and time management
• In-depth understanding of investment banking products (can be enhanced and further built via training)
Control skills
• Excellent understanding of financial, legal and reputational risks facing large integrated investment banks today (essential)
• Familiarity with local regulatory requirements (can be provided through training)
Partnership skills
• Strong team player (essential)
• Strong project management skills and ability to independently drive various work streams (can be enhanced through on-the-job training)

• Outstanding written and oral communication skills
• Experience in dealing with clients and other transactional advisers (can be enhanced through training)
• Strong management skills enabling candidate to effectively manage more junior bankers in high pressure environment

Qualifications:
• Bachelor degree is preferable
