Job description

For IKEA Components, Fasteners are an essential part of their range. In furniture, fasteners are selected based on the material (wood, metal, plastic) and assembly type of the furniture. IKEA has developed its own range of fasteners to meet their furniture requirements and have a competitive price. To further develop the IKEA fasteners range, there is a need to gather more technical information to be used as a starting block to identify potential improvement areas and to create better selection tools.

In this thesis, you will have the opportunity to contribute to improving the database for the fastener range at IKEA Components. The goal of this thesis is to evaluate the mechanical properties of fasteners. This is done through: 
•    Conducting tests on fasteners in different material applications. 
•    Utilize a statistical approach to evaluate the outcome.
•    Develop/improve the method for a selection tool based on findings.
•    Identify improvement areas based on outcome.

Qualification

You are probably a master or bachelor student in Mechanical-, civil-, physics- engineering, or equal. The task consists of both theoretical and particle aspects, thereby, you should be able to carry out the test either at the university and/or at IKEA’s test facility.

More Information

The assignment will be carried out on location in Älmhult, Sweden. The end  result should be delivered as a report along with “work” files for further use.
