Job description

Company description

We are IKEA!
At IKEA Components we develop, source, pack, and supply components in areas where it benefits IKEA and the IKEA customer.
We integrate backward in the IKEA value chain to create a better everyday life for the many people.
We focus on creating price advantage through business development and economy of scale and securing excellence within design, quality, availability, and sustainability.

At IKEA Components simulations are an essential part of our development process.
To further strengthen our simulation capabilities, breaking new grounds is essential.
One step in developing new products is to evaluate the robustness of the design, including tolerances, material- and manufacturing influences. By evaluating the robustness of the design, IKEA can primarily guarantee a better product, and, secondly, by setting the correct tolerances, etc. lower the production cost.
Today, a robust design study is done through physical testing to get a natural mixture of the effects.
However, by instead doing this through FEA, each parameter’s influence can be evaluated in detail, and a sharper limit/tolerance can be set.

Job description

In this Master thesis, you will have the opportunity to impact parts of the product development process for IKEA. The main objective is to create a method for robust design through FEA combined with the traditional statically approach of Six Sigma. As a final step, a comparison and validation of the method are used for physical testing.
This thesis aims to evaluate possible methods with the accuracy, practicality, and cost aspects in mind. This is done through:

•    Statistical analysis through Six Sigma from historical value
•    FEA simulation of tolerances and material deviation.
•    Physical verification of components at the IKEA test lab.

Qualification

You are probably a master’s or bachelor student within the field of Mechanical-, civil-, physics- engineering, or equal.
You should have a working understanding of solid mechanics. The task consists of both theoretical and particle aspects, thereby you should be able to carry out the test either at the university and/or at IKEA’s test facility.

More Information

The assignment will be carried out on location in Älmhult or per agreement. The end result should be delivered as a report along with “work” files for further use.
If you have any questions about the thesis assignment, please contact IKEA Supervisor Erik Hult at erik.hult@inter.ikea.com
Submit your application together with your personal letter in English latest 1 October.

To take part of the Thesis work, you must be enrolled in a thesis course provided at university level/Thesis agreement with a university in Sweden.

Make every future a success.
