Shift Engineer

  • London (Greater London)
  • Design / Civil engineering / Industrial engineering

Job description

As a Shift Engineer at the Andaz London Liverpool Street, I am the ‘hidden face' of the hotel and the organisation, working behind the scenes, but also a key person who helps shape the overall experience for both guests and colleagues during their time at the hotel.

Essentially I run the Engineering shift in the hotel and also provide cover in the department as and when it's needed so being flexible is important to help the team run efficiently; I work a set shift pattern, four days on shift (which is two day shifts followed by two night shifts) and then have four days off. Being able to adapt to the different shift pattern is essential and having four days off in a row is a nice thing!

Experience wise, I have good skills in the normal trades such as carpentry, plumbing and electrics; a recognised trade qualification is an advantage but not a necessary requirement for this position as I'm always being trained and developed. Some experience gained from the hotel industry is really useful as it helped me to hit the ground running when I started but it's not necessary to be successful. What I like about this job is the opportunity to grow and develop as I learned the business and operations.

Understanding the systems of the hotel and the logistics of the building is also central to the job and one of the challenges; the building was originally built in 1884 so there's a lot to learn and lots of unique features that make for a very varied role. I work within an upbeat fun team that includes other Engineers, Painters and specialists; working closely with other departments is also important to our success and this helps us all work to the same plan and ensure our work is impacting in the right areas. We work daily with members of the Housekeeping team and Front Office operations to name a couple and being able to communicate effectively outside my own team is also therefore super important.

Hotels can often present some weird and wonderful situations but these go towards creating an extremely varied and diverse role. No two days are ever the same and the team motivate each other to be the best we can be each and every day. I love to be part of an environment that is fun, creative, open to change and new ideas, often finding inspiration through our own ideas or experience.
