Principal Business Architect

Role Purpose

The Principal Business Architect is responsible for driving and translating business strategy into target operating models, identifying business and enterprise wide impacts of new change including areas of benefits and potential drawbacks for customer experience, profitability, cost efficiency, operational risk management and infrastructure. Principal Business Architect works across key Commercial Bank stakeholders, the Transformation team, Commercial Banking (CMB) Operations and other key supply partners to ensure that change supports an effective transition to the target business environment.

The Principal Business Architect acts as a trusted advisor to senior Business stakeholders throughout the change lifecycle, leading business architects, business analysts, process consultants and IT architects to align IT strategy / architecture, process reengineering and organisation design to operating models. They will be focused on business architecture design / definition and ensuring that smaller activities being led by Process Consultants fit into the wider architecture (and are aligned to the strategy).

Value Creation
· Influence and engage with senior stakeholders in the business and delivery partners to build a pipeline of high value business architecture consulting engagements
· Capture target business models (goals, products, target customer groups etc), provide traceability through to operating model design and assess impact of change against the models so that planned change supports enduring and measurable business capability and competitive advantage
· Develop Target Operating Model (TOM) designs that describe how the business will be structured to deliver the target business model comprising customer experience standards, organisation and other people impacts, process and technology.
· Analyse current state operating models against target model to identify gaps and opportunities to support an effective transition towards the target state
· Integrate operating model work with Customer Experience guidelines, IT strategy / architecture conducted by IT; process work conducted by Process Consultants, Operations and the CMB business; and any Credit, Operational and other Risk guidelines focusing on alignment and new business capabilities.
· Assess the impact of change against Target Business Model (TBM) / TOM and engage with business leaders, Product Owners, Strategic Business Change Directors and Managers plus delivery partners to create an optimal change portfolio that supports a pragmatic and optimal evolution to the target state, ensuring alignment to business goals and minimising gaps and overlaps between change initiatives. May be required to advise in any ongoing re-prioritisation of the portfolio.
· Participate and lead in organisational design (structure, teams, jobs) with the business and with HR. Support organisation sizing and capacity planning work.
· Ensure business architecture is communicated and well understood so that change activity is informed by target business and operating models
· Drive and support change initiation activities to ensure effective implementation of TBMs and TOMs and to assist early business case work with benefit analysis of the change interventions.
· Lead, influence and collaborate with stakeholders and business partners, building strong relationships to ensure consensus and influence / persuade to deliver change outcomes. Foster open and honest communication which anticipates stakeholder expectations and clearly communicates risks.
· Support solution design providing advice on solution options and ensuring alignment to operating model. Provide early input into Change and Implementation planning, particularly the Change Impact Assessment and Audience Analysis.
· Provide direction to senior business architects and analysts in delivery of business architecture services

· Challenge the conventional thinking of the group and establish a design based on structured models, business components and future demand rather than legacy organisational structures. Challenging the “not invented here” mentality.
· Operating in a resource constrained environment requiring prioritisation and optimisation based on measurable benefits and risks.
· The identification and alignment of ongoing change activities in process, IT architecture and organisation to business models

Role Context

The vision statement for Transformation is “To be HSBC's primary change partner, support the implementation of the Group Strategy and make change a source of sustainable competitive advantage for HSBC”. Business Architects work within the CMB Transformation team to provide high value services to business partners.

Business Architects are responsible for developing operating models, assessing change impact and supporting the shaping of change so that the change portfolio supports the strategy and leads to enduring business capability and competitive advantage. They are required to take a leading role in shaping the business operating environment and supporting change portfolio, working across multiple stakeholders and delivery partners on solutions and to balance strategic and tactical needs with a strong commercial focus.

The jobholder will not be subject to close supervision, and will be expected to exercise independent initiative in developing opportunities, proactively overcoming obstacles to success and dealing with uncertainty and changing circumstances. He / She will be expected to adopt an agile and flexible approach to work and an outstanding level of professionalism and conduct. The role holder will operate within the usual authority limits for a Principal Business Architect

This will be achieved by reviewing risks associated with the role and inherent in the business, taking account of changing global economic or market conditions, legal and regulatory requirements, operating procedures and practices, management restructurings, and the impact of new processes. Effective and timely notification of risks to appropriate bodies should be evidenced

Knowledge & Experience / Qualifications


Knowledge
·  A strong knowledge of Target Business and Operating Models and transformation and identifying benefits and risks of alignment to these
·  A strong knowledge of Change and Implementation principles, particularly Change Impact Assessment and Audience Analysis.
·  Strong understanding of enterprise architecture modeling
·  Overall financial services industry knowledge with specific functional expertise; cross-functional expertise beneficial
·  Excellent understanding of Global Transformation Business Transformation Frameworks, Agile and best practice techniques
·  A thorough understanding of the purpose, culture and fundamentals of Global Transformation

Experience
·  Diverse experience and a variety of skills related to supporting large and complex change including people, process and technology development
·  Experience of working in application, data, process, organisation architecture and design
·  Proven ability to work with senior stakeholders and business sponsors
·  Evidence of confidently operating at an Executive level
·  Proven ability to work across regions whilst maintaining a global perspective
·  Demonstration of strong commercial awareness in developing architectures
·  Evidence of ability to make key strategic decisions

The base location for this role is 8 Canada Square, London.
