Job description

The IBM Mainframe System Programmer role is based within the Mainframe Infrastructure team, part of HTSE IT Operations.
 
The role of the IBM Mainframe System Programmer is to provide support for the services hosted in the UK datacentre. You will be part of a large multi-disciplined zSeries mainframe team, dealing primarily with system configuration and support.
 
The postholder will work in an environment where systems are continually developing, utilising the latest advancements in Mainframe technology. As part of the onboarding into the role, the postholder will be offered the opportunity to spend the first 3 months working alongside team members at our South Yorkshire Global Data Centre to learn HSBC processes and standards.
 
Your responsibilities will include:

Providing support for the services hosted in the UK datacentre
z/OS performance and production support including out of hours troubleshooting support
Testing of system hardware, software and application transactions to ensure efficient use of resource prior to implementation, using the most cost efficient option
Project managing the delivery of services by other internal/external teams
Designing and delivering new hardware and software technology solutions whilst demonstrating strong analytical skills and high attention to detail
Managing risk and ensuring compliance with all relevant instructions and regulations, working with minimal supervision

Desired profile

The ideal candidate for this role will have:

Relevant product knowledge including knowledge of System Modification Program/Extended (SMP/E), Job Control Language (JCL), Interactive System Product Facility (ISPF)
Experience working in relevant environment/s, i.e. IBM Mainframe environments
Past working experience in a relevant role, i.e. Good technical design and implementation skills with a proven track record of delivering large and complex projects
Past working experience on relevant systems, i.e. z/OS mainframe operating systems
Relevant product knowledge including knowledge of managing System Performance and a good understanding of: Automation, Scheduling , Security & Assembler Programming, Unix Systems Services, REXX programming is desirable but not essential
A track record of gaining an understanding of customers' needs and delivering excellent customer service
A track record of constantly looking for ways to do things better and an excellent understanding of the mechanism necessary to successfully implement change
Self awareness with confidence to work independently and take responsibility for own development
Both spoken and written communication skills with experience of adapting your style and approach to the audience and message to be delivered
Experience of creating and deploying comprehensive business/operating plans which consistently deliver desired results
Supported project teams/managers, showing an understanding of the basic principles of project management
In addition to the details listed above, the ideal candidate will have a high level of technical expertise along with the ability to react rapidly and effectively to change. This knowledge will be both specific to the technology supported and the infrastructure to which it interfaces. There will be an expectation for the postholder to participate in an out-of-hours troubleshooting rota.
 
The base location for this role is Sheffield - Griffin House (City Centre) or South Yorkshire Global Data Centre (J36 M1).
