Hadoop Administrator

Job description

The Hadoop Administrator role is based within Group Big Data Services. We provide the design, development and deployment of Hadoop solutions to globally agreed standards. Our purpose and vision are to deliver an efficient and cost-effective service through standardisation and effective prioritisation of work for the global business.
 
The role of the Hadoop Administrator is to be responsible for designing, building, managing, monitoring, troubleshooting, tuning, job management, backups, expanding and maintaining HSBC’s Hadoop infrastructure. Required characteristics are a team player, with good inter-personal and technical skills, able to communicate and resolve issues quickly.
 
Your responsibilities will include:
Understanding all aspects of the hadoop eco system so that informed choices can be made regarding network and hardware, operating system and hadoop configuration through to end user tooling and provisioning.
Implementing and maintaining infrastructure, as designed by the Big Data Architects, in accordance with the group operational and security standards and policies.
The management of core eco system components (HDFS, Hive, HBase) and related eco system tools (Pig, HQL, Map/Reduce…).
Understanding the interaction between the hadoop eco system and other data sources. e.g. ensure other systems are not impacted by hadoop work profiles.
Ensuring standard operational requirements are met through implementation of infrastructure to perform monitoring, contingency, user provisioning, etc.

Desired profile

The ideal candidate for this role will have:
Relevant product knowledge including knowledge of Knowledge of one or more of the following hadoop, hortonworks, hbase, hdfs, Java, python, mapred, falcon, storm, nagios, hive, mapred, yarn, linux, redhat, operating system
Experience working in relevant environment/s, i.e. IT or technical environment
Availability to work the shift pattern required for this role, i.e. Not shift, but out of hours on-call work.
Availability to undertake the travel required for this role, i.e. May be required to travel to alternative datacentres or attend hadoop conferences internationally
Role relevant qualifications, i.e. Computer science degree or related qualifications or equivalent experience is desirable but not essential

Both spoken and written communication skills with experience of adapting your style and approach to the audience and message to be delivered

Supported project teams/managers, showing an understanding of the basic principles of project management
The base location for this role is Sheffield or Leeds.
