Highlights of Department

Balance Sheet Management (BSM) is a Front Office business and is an integral part of HSBC Group. BSM is responsible for the management of the liquidity, funding and structural interest rate risk for HSBC Group. BSM actively manages the bank's investment portfolio of high quality liquid assets which form part of the Liquid Assets Buffer.

BSM, being a global business, is a significant contributor to the revenue of the Group with staff in over 50 sites. BSM works closely with other businesses, represents the bank's interests in external forums and engages with the regulators.

Role

The position offers a good entry point into the team with an opportunity to build knowledge of a broad variety of banking products e.g. sovereign and sub-sovereign bonds, interest rate derivatives, money market loans/ deposits, commercial paper, repos etc. The position also offers a chance to increase understanding of the bank's balance sheet and expand one's network and visibility. The nature of the role and the breadth of work undertaken by BSM ensure that there is always a lot to learn and a variety of challenges to deal with.

Performing analysis on various liquidity metrics, funding planning and cashflow projections, monitoring key trends in the composition of the bank's balance sheet and producing revenue and MTM estimates and forecasts on a regular basis are a few examples of the analytical tasks which can be expected.

BSM is required to manage a diversified pool of assets in accordance with regulatory and internal requirements including ensuring monetisation in a variety of stressed scenarios. In addition to this, another key part of BSM is the management of the market risks resulting from the term interest rate risk buy-in and the Liquid Assets Buffer whilst optimising returns for the bank. The role holder will be able to benefit from the experience on the desk and would gradually be expected to contribute actively to managing the portfolio.

Knowledge & Experience / Qualifications

A significant degree of analytical rigour, to quickly grasp the concepts and provide the required support to the team, can be expected in this role. A steep learning curve is likely to be involved and hence, a high degree of motivation, adaptability and proactiveness are key success factors for the role.

• Degree holder, preferably with a professional qualification

• Previous experience in BSM or Global Markets is welcome but not necessary

• Strong analytical background essential

• Strong computer skills with the ability to develop and maintain robust models

• Excellent communication skills to deal with a diverse set of stakeholders

• Good team player with a proactive and self-motivated attitude and ability to think and act independently.

• A general knowledge of markets and economies

• Product knowledge (even theoretical) in Fixed Income, IR derivatives, FX swaps would be an advantage
