Role Title: Global Head of Data Analytics Operations

Role Purpose
·         Responsible for managing the shared service that provides data analytics to the GBM global customer base utilising the HSBC “Big Data” lake and tools.  This is a high profile role for GBM with the key objective of completing the build out and transition to “BAU” of an analytics operation to monetise data (ultimately revenue generation) for the business. 
·         In addition to leading the innovative use of data tools and techniques, the role will be responsible for ensuring there are;
·         Effective controls in place for models and applications built
·         Feedback mechanisms into other operation units to improve the quality of source data
·         The shared service offering is high risk and, if not properly managed, can incur risk of financial and reputational loss.
 
Key Accountabilities
Impact on the Business
·         Manage the onshore and offshore teams to deliver high quality, accurate and cost effective data models and applications to the business
·         Be the key stakeholder in determining the most efficient and cost effective data analytics services for meeting GBM/CMB  needs.
·         Exercise a flexible approach to change both tactically and strategically in order to meet business requirements
·         Create and promote a data analytics strategy to deploy within GBM and in conjunction with other business areas and group functions eg Risk
·         Manage budget within guidelines and AOP
·         Create the Data Analytics TOM to ensure that the most appropriate organisational structures, systems, procedures and controls are utilised.
 
Customers / Stakeholders
·         Manage effective  relationships with the business globally
·         Ensure the service that is delivered meets business requirements
·         Ensure excellent and timely service delivery through management and monitoring of PLAs, process productivity and quality targets, optimum resource utilisation and achievement of business objectives and customer SLAs.
·         Manage governance forums to ensure business needs are met
·         Manage and implement business data model requests in order to support business change and growth.
·         Understand future business demands on the team; integrating with data analytics strategy where possible
·         Work with other GB/GF’s to understand  their data analytics strategy and integrate and align
·         Work with GDS to manage vendor client data costs in line with budget guidelines           
 
Leadership & Teamwork
·         Recruit, lead and manage a team of people ensuring staff development and retention and increased stability in the operations.
·         Effectively manage both in-house and external resources (consultants and contractors)
·         Recruit the best people to support business goals and objectives
·         Ensure staff retention through appropriate rewards strategy, staff management and development, and career progression
·         Drive staff development through training, development plans and performance management
·         Motivate team performance and develop staff knowledge to enhance quality
·         Promote effective communication with team members on  strategy, objectives and key goals required for the respective roles and responsibilities
 
Operational Effectiveness & Control
·         Adherence to Group policies, audit, controls, and compliance requirements (particularly around data sharing, data ingestion and controls around access to data)
·         Continually assess the operational risks inherent in the processes, taking account of changing operating procedures, staff movements, legal and regulatory requirements, management restructures, and the impact of new technology
·         Carry out effective Operational Risk Assessment by monitoring and implementing process reviews and developing risk mitigation plans.
·         Ensure satisfactory audit ratings
 
Major Challenges
·         Model creation for revenue generation is still a relatively a new concept for the business so the biggest challenge will be ensuring the success of the output (ie models) and then building a BAU operations to support and control this
·         Managing business engagement, particularly with competing priorities and demand for resource
·         Managing relationships with Compliance & Legal and understanding what can / can not be done
·         Maintaining a high level of engagement with clients, balancing the business demands against efficiency and quality targets
·         Managing a team across multiple locations and time zones
·         Managing and guiding a team of consultant Data Scientists
·         Interface with other group functions (eg Risk and RBWM) for determining horizontal opportunities across the Group for shared services in data analytics
·         Building and Delivering the data analytics TOM
 
Role Context
·         A data lake has recently been built providing the opportunity for multiple different data sets (eg revenue, transactional, payments) to be accessed from a single source.  This now allows GBM to:
·         Undertake data analytics for revenue generation purposes and to deliver other business benefits (eg data quality analysis) and enabling other business initiatives.  This will involve data scientists working with the business to prototype models and once approved these are moved into production
·         Continue data analytics for accelerating data quality across the source systems feeding the lake.  This will involve building models to measure key data indicators and feeding results back to the system owners
·         This role will be responsible for creating and then running the operations required around above.  This will include;
·         Finalising and implementing the TOM including face offs to the business, IT, and other business lines (in particular CMB and RBWM) and functions (in particular Risk including FIPL and FCRIS)
·         Production process for model generation
·         Production process for application generation
·         Production process for feeding data quality initiatives back to source systems
·         Implementing governance structures to manage business priorities and data quality initiatives
·         Creating Centres of Excellence across the horizontals in Data Analytics Operations with other GBs/GFs
·         Creating a high performance/cost effective team to operate above
·         The job holder is expected to act with autonomy, making decisions on the Data Analytics Operation, management of the staff and delivery of the services, as well as driving growth opportunities and value creation.
 
Role Dimensions
·         AOP for GBM Data Analytics will be submitted for 2016.  A requirement of this role will be to propose the dimensions of the operating unit include FTE and budget
 
Management of Risk
·         Is aware of the Operational Risk scenario associated with the role and acts in a manner that takes account of operational risk considerations.
 
Observation of Internal Controls
·         Maintains HSBC internal control standards, including timely implementation of internal and external audit points together with any issues raised by external regulators.
·         Understands, follows and demonstrates compliance with all relevant internal and external rules, regulations and procedures that apply to the conduct of the business in which the jobholder is involved, specifically Internal Controls and any Compliance policy including, inter alia, the Group Compliance policy.

Desired profile

Knowledge & Experience / Qualifications
·         Ideally: Regional/Global head of a data analytics team providing shared services across business lines and global functions in a financial services organisation
·         Working in an investment bank or financial services industry.
·         Subject matter expertise in leveraging data analytics to achieve business opportunities using a cost effective services platform
·         In-depth knowledge of Data Analytics tools & techniques
·         Proven experience in managing operational teams and processes
·         Proven experience of delivering a data analytics service within a financial services organisation (including working within legal and compliance policies) – particularly in a global environment with understanding and appreciation of different jurisdiction requirements
·         Proven delivery of change programmes that include both process and data that deliver measurable benefits 
·         Experience of managing staff across multiple geographies and timezones. 
·         Experience in executive stakeholder facing roles supporting major clients and lines of business
·         Proven track record of managing operational risk, enhancing performance and improving customer service. 
·         Experience of managing budgets and staff numbers of similar size
·         Strong leadership skills evidenced by achievement of objectives with strong organisation and planning skills
·         Ability to build and maintain relations with business units and deliver services through management of quality measurement tools
