Job description

Role Purpose
·         Market Risk Manager reporting to the Global Head of Traded Risk for BSM. Responsible for daily monitoring of market risk taking activity, reviewing market risk limits, communicating key risks and critical issues to Senior MRM and Business Management, reviewing new products, assisting with key regulatory initiatives, and managing the systems infrastructure involved in delivering the required information for the role. The person in this role will need to establish strong partnership with the Front Office and other areas and at the same time will need to be able to challenge them when necessary. A good understanding of the general principals under which a bank manages the transfer of IR risk and prices liquidity between the various business groups. The role also has a particular focus on the implementation and ongoing validation of the Volcker rule.

Principal Accountabilities:  Key activities and decision making areas
Impact on the Business
·         Monitoring of market risk positions with respect to market conditions, regardless of whether close or in excess of limits, and escalation of any identified inappropriate activity to senior management.
·         Reviewing new products and structures to identify all material market risks and ensuring effective controls surround these to ensure appropriate risk management occurs during their life cycle.
·         Provide management with advice on market risk related and internal controls advice
·         Provision of market risk management information to senior management as necessary to enable decision making with regards to positions.
·         Implementation of the systems strategy for BSM and Sites in line with the MRMaC strategy to ensure that the market risk function is able to effectively and efficiently perform its core functions.
·         Implementation and on-going monitoring of Volcker-related risk management.
·         Understand  of how BSM interacts with the other global business lines

·         Ensure MRM provides the right level of value added to BSM and other  businesses through ensuring the correct balance of commercial market risk management activity and of market risk limit monitoring and other official market risk monitoring activity

·         Development and implementation of effective processes systems supporting risk strategy
·         Development of efficient and streamlined market risk processes

·         Dynamic Market Conditions (Emerging markets / high growth or established markets facing recession) across businesses pose a range of risks. The jobholder needs to be able to influence these strategies to ensure that risks are identified addressed & managed
·         Highly motivated self-starter who is capable to drive the improvements in order to assist the regional head of BSM and Sites Market Risk Management in taking the function forward

·         Navigating a challenging regulatory environment, with particular emphasis on the Volcker regulations

·         The nature of the role requires staying in close contact with Front Office and other areas

·         Independence in terms of exercising authority across various sizeable business lines with accountability for approving large exposures & related management
·         High risk & fast changing environment – interrelated risks & increasing globalization make markets vulnerable to changes elsewhere & in different segments / industries.

Management of Risk (Operational Risk / FIM requirements)
·         The jobholder has responsibility for assisting the Global Head of Traded Risk for BSM ensuring that the businesses market risks are managed across the businesses in accordance with the Group Standards Manual, Market Risk FIM, & relevant guidelines & standards including the Regulatory environment.
·         This will include participation in and contribution to regional  control effectiveness assessments and driving remedial actions.
 
Observance of Internal Controls (Compliance Policy / FIM requirements)
·         Maintains HSBC internal standards, as they relate to Market Risk, including timely implementation of internal and external audit points together with any issues raised by external regulators.
 

Desired profile

·         Experience in a trading role as a cash manager, preferably in a multi-currency balance sheet
·         Understanding of how a banks internal interest rate risk transfer works
·         Knowledge of  interest rate derivative s and how they are used as hedges to balance sheet  items
·         Good communication and interpersonal skills
·         Team player
·         Ability to form good working relationships within and outside the Traded Risk team
·         Strong quantitative skills: market data analysis
·         Strong technical skills (VBA, SQL, Matlab, C )
·         Understanding of emerging/developing markets an advantage
·         Ability to understand and interpret complex business requirements
·         Ability to obtain data from multiple sources, link and analyse the information, perform data integrity checks
·         Ability to prioritize competing demands
