Job description
HSBC Payment Services is being increasingly required to provide data (predominantly payment sets; but additionally other associated / ancillary transactions) to meet both internal and external (regulator / other) needs.
The Data Analyst will work within Payment Services (Payments and Cash Management) and provide support to meet payments / transactional data provision requirements for the Group. Working with multiple teams (Onshore and offshore) the role holder will gather, analyse and summarise the data sets. The candidate will be required to work on multiple front end tools / platforms to achieve this and will often have to deal with multiple requests requiring prioritisation and potential parallel activity (data availability dependent).
The role holder must be able to (critical to role):
work with extremely large and complex data sets across various systems;
merge large data sets to generate results and
use learnings from those data sets to be able to summarise the observations to meet the requirements from users in a manner that is capable of comprehension.
The Data Analyst must demonstrate a strong desire to develop and improve knowledge around payments systems and processes to the extent required to carry out meaningful analysis of the data sets generated by those systems. It is essential to have knowledge around data analysis tools and should have demonstrable interest in new technologies in this space.
Your responsibilities will include:
Impact on the Business
Key Analyst in Payments (transactions and associated) data provision for the Group
Clarify and understand the nature of the request with view to ensuring the request is inscope (i.e. data Payment Services can provide) and additionally establishing / drafting succinct and accurate data requirements
Ability to communicate what data can and cannot be provided along with alternatives where appropriate
Capable of data translation and provision in a manner that the recipient can understand
Provide data to support commercial / strategic needs and the management of risk
Identify commercial application and opportunities of the data available – leveraging data to create value-insights
Customers / Stakeholders
Clients (data requestors / recipients) will be internal / external
The candidate will
Have strong interpersonal / questioning skills and able to communicate appropriately with stakeholders
Participate in project working group meetings and ability to represent the projects at various committees and meetings
Work with IT, subject matter experts to build awareness to ensure that solutions designed meet requirements and mitigate risk
Ability to work with various stakeholders in understanding requirements, solution design and delivery of data within agreed timelines
Leadership & Teamwork
Develop and support analytical models within remit to analyse data
Ability to build and leverage network within cross function of business lines
Demonstrate leadership by owning data requests and ensure delivering them on time
Link with other HSBC data teams to ensure other datasets leveraged as appropriate
Operational Effectiveness & Control
Ensure all data is handled as per HSBC Information Classification policy and guidelines
Strict adherence to Information security guidelines when handling any data sets
Create and deliver analytical solutions that are fully documented and explained that meet business requirements
Identify and escalate any emerging risk issues identified as a part of day to day work.
Ensure all artifacts relating to a data set provided to user are recorded for audit trails
Desired profile
The ideal candidate for this role will have:
Extensive and demonstrable Data Analyst experience
Relevant product knowledge including good knowledge of payment / transactional systems and processes
Past working experience in a relevant role, i.e. Understanding and prior use of various datasets and ability to write queries (SQL, other)
Past working experience on relevant systems, i.e. Excellent working knowledge Desktop IT applications, e.g. MS Excel, Access and Powerpoint
Knowledge of Big Data concepts (Desirable)
A desire to find ways to continually improve the service delivered to customers
Set and achieved challenging short, medium and long term goals which exceeded the standards in their field
Both spoken and written communication skills with experience of adapting your style and approach to the audience and message to be delivered
Planned projects and activities systematically in line with business priorities, using a variety of analysis and problem solving techniques
Proven experience of successful project management, utilising relevant tools and techniques to ensure consistent delivery
The base location for this role is Harbour Exchange, London.
