HSBC Securities Services (HSS) provides end-to-end securities services including fund administration, global custody, sub-custody and clearing, corporate trust and loan agency and other related value-added securities services to circa 3,500 clients around the world, and has over 7,200 employees.  As part of Global Banking and Markets, we serve large institutional clients - banks and broker dealers, asset managers, hedge fund managers, insurance companies, pension funds, sovereign wealth funds and central banks.
 
Role Purpose


We are currently seeking an experienced professional to join our team as Business Manager, HSS London.  The purpose of the role is to support the HSS European COO and the senior management team across a broad and varied remit, from strategic planning through to day-to-day business management activities. The role has functional management responsibilities for Business Risk and Control Management (UK) and Business Training (UK).

The Business Manager will also take responsibility and accountability for the delivery of several business projects, with the support of identified subject matter experts and work-stream leads.  This will require the end-to-end co-ordination and delivery of agreed initiatives, ensuring effective planning; governance, progress reporting, timely decision making and facilitates the successful implementation of the project goals and objectives.

The role holder will have a high degree of interaction with other businesses / functions, ensuring robust processes and procedures are in place to support the HSS product, and to provide subject matter expertise on the HSS business and operating model.
 
 
Key Accountabilities


Provides business management support to HSS European COO and senior management team in London.  This comprises a broad and varied remit, including preparation, maintenance and monitoring of the business plan, report collation and analysis, management committee agendas, driving forward completion of open actions, regulatory returns and other day-to-day operating activities.

Maintains functional responsibility for Business Risk and Control Management (UK), ensuring HSS London is compliant with HSBC wide policies and procedures, maintaining an acceptable level of business and operational risk.  The role holder will create an environment where policies are followed, control checks are in place and ensures satisfactory outcome of business audit reviews.

Maintains functional responsibility for Business Training Specialist (UK) who supports HSS London's Service Delivery teams. This involves the Business Trainer working with the business to identify, design and deliver high quality training sessions where appropriate and drives forward the people development agenda.

Actively manages internal relationships with relevant businesses / functions which support HSS business as usual activity.  Areas include Global Banking, Financial Crime Compliance, Regulatory Compliance, Global Banking Middle Office and Wholesale Market and Credit Risk.

Takes overall responsibility and accountability for the co-ordination and delivery of identified business projects, ensuring effective planning; governance, progress reporting, timely decision making and facilitates the successful implementation of the project goals and objectives.

Identifies initiatives to improve business processes – quality, speed and accuracy, ensuring HSS product alignment with the Group’s target operating models.  Consults subject matter experts and gathers feedback on all matters impacting day-to-day operations, obtaining stakeholder buy-in and driving forward implementation of agreed opportunities.
 
Customers / Stakeholders


Develop and maintain strong relationships with regional and country business management teams across HSS Europe, including functional support personnel, ensuring a comprehensive understanding of the HSS hub and spoke business operating model.

Form partnerships with client groups, GBM and CMB, engaging with relevant client sector teams – Asset Managers, Insurance Companies, Hedge Funds, Public Sector, Banks and Broker Dealers and Corporates.

Work closely with the GBM Middle Office organisation, including Credit Services, Client Management and KYC Services.  The Middle Office organisation acts on all Credit and on-boarding request emanating from HSS.

Develop and maintain relationships with Wholesale Market and Credit Risk, the Credit policy owner and approval authority for HSS clients with Credit needs – typically Global Markets products such as FX and uncommitted liquidity facilities.

Ensure close contact with FCC UK, the Client Due Diligence policy owner, for HSS clients engaging in a relationship with HSBC Bank plc in the UK.

This role requires proactive collaboration with multiple stakeholders of different seniority and cultures to deliver results.  The role holder must be able to influence senior management and articulate clear business reasons for change initiatives.

Provide personnel oversight, as required, and effectively lead through communication, performance management, development plans and reward/recognition practices.

Promote effective communication with team members on strategy, objectives and key goals required for the respective roles and responsibilities.
 
 
Operational Effectiveness & Control


Maintains HSBC internal control standards, including timely implementation of internal and external audit points together with any issues raised by external regulators.
 
 
Major Challenges


The Securities Services business is seeking to grow rapidly in a challenging market which is subject to ongoing regulatory and industry change.  The role holder will have to keep abreast of all internal and external developments that impact the execution of the HSS strategy. 

There are a number of competing priorities across HSS and the wider Group.  Identified workstream leads / subject matter experts are not dedicated project resources or project managers and it is a key challenge to keep the momentum of projects moving forward at the required pace and following a disciplined project and reporting structure.

The incumbent is required to effectively collaborate across HSS, GBM and Global Functions to deliver against goals and objectives.  This will involve driving results through a shared services organisation where leveraging resources across functions is key, without direct reporting lines.
 
 
Role Context


This role is based in Canary Wharf, London and forms part of the HSS European COO team.

Internal clients will typically be senior management and Heads of business units across Custody, Fund Services and CTLA.

The role holder will be expected to undertake both BAU activities and initiate / manage re-engineering projects.

The role holder is expected to operate within guidance and policy as mandated in the respective FIMs.
 
Role Dimensions


The role sits within the European COO function and principally covers HSS in London.  The role will require interaction with other jurisdictions as driven by business needs.  Project initiatives are expected to encompass additional locations such as Ireland and Luxembourg, who operate a hub-and-spoke business model with London. This is a new position and currently has no direct headcount, however it is expected that the role holder will be required to build a business case and implement a small BAU oversight structure for on-boarding and alliance management.

The jobholder will continually reassess the operational risks associated with the role and inherent in the business, taking account of changing economic or market conditions, legal and regulatory requirements, operating procedures and practices, management restructurings, and the impact of new technology.

Understands, follows and demonstrates compliance with all relevant internal and external rules, regulations and procedures that apply to the conduct of the business in which the jobholder is involved, specifically Internal Controls and any Compliance policy including, inter alia, the Group Compliance policy.
 
 
Observation of Internal Controls


The role holder will adhere to and be able to demonstrate adherence to internal controls.  This will be achieved by adherence to all relevant Group policies and procedures, translating these into desk instruction manuals, keeping appropriate records, and where appropriate, by the timely implementation of internal and external audit points.

The role holder will implement the Group Compliance policy by consulting with the Compliance function as it relates to client on-boarding.  The term ‘compliance’ embraces all relevant financial services laws, rules and code with which the business has to comply.

This will be achieved by adhering to all relevant processes/procedures and by liaising with Compliance department about new business initiatives at the earliest opportunity. Also and when applicable, by ensuring adequate resources are in place and training is provided, fostering a compliance culture and optimising relations with regulators
