HSBC’s M&A / Advisory practice advises corporate and institutional clients globally on a wide range of strategic transactions. This advice covers mergers and acquisitions, divestitures, asset purchases and dispositions, joint ventures, private capital raisings and corporate restructurings. Working closely with colleagues across Global Banking, the M&A group provides the knowledge and expertise to play an important and trusted role in shaping and executing a company’s strategy.  Successful candidates  need to have a real passion for a career in this area, coupled with strong business acumen and commercial sense.   
 
The associate will be a key member of the M&A team and will assist in developing strategic dialog with clients and in executing live M&A transactions across all industry sectors. The candidate will have strong analytical and communication skills, strong intellectual curiosity, and demonstrate the ability to make immediate contributions across various stages of transactions. The position will report to the Staffer of the M&A team. Key responsibilities include: 
Actively participate in the origination and day-to-day deal execution of M&A transactions across sectors, interacting with senior deal team members, client management teams and transaction counterparties
Build, maintain and review complex financial models and valuation analyses, including DCF, trading comparables, precedent transactions, LBO analyses, merger models and other related analyses
Conduct in-depth fundamental industry and company research and supporting quantitative analyses
Coordinate with internal coverage partners and product groups, including leveraged & acquisition finance, debt and equity capital markets, to provide clients with integrated advisory and financing solutions
Manage several projects at once and work effectively as an individual and as part of a team, including managing analysts
Play an important role in the further development of the M&A team, including participating in the recruitment, development and training of junior bankers (analysts, summer analysts/associates

Desired profile

Bachelors’ degree from a leading university and exceptional academic performance; MBA is preferred for candidates that were not directly promoted from Analyst to Associate within a leading Investment Bank
Superior written and verbal communications skills
Strong quantitative and qualitative analytical skills
Demonstrated knowledge and experience in finance, accounting, financial modeling and valuation
A strong understanding of economics and the global financial markets
Highest level of integrity and professional judgment
Commitment to a collaborative / team-based environment
Exceptional level of proficiency in Microsoft Office applications and ability to quickly learn new IT applications
A second language is advantageous, but not essential
