Job description

Role: Game Programmer

Location: Auckland, New Zealand

Hours: Full Time

Salary: $30,000 - $60,000

My client is an innovative gaming studio based in Auckland and they like to do things differently. In fact, their by-line is "Telling an alternative story".

The full team are all passionate gamers, and know from first-hand experience how immersive and life-changing a good game can be. They all have fond memories of Legend of Zelda, Chrono trigger, GoldenEye, and Commander Keen!

As a passionate gaming studio, they are on a mission to tell an alternative story of how both educational and Christian/religious games can be. So, their goal is to build a multiplayer online adventure game for 10-12 year olds based on the story of the Bible, and to do it really well. In fact, they are and will aim to be the premiere provider of Christian based games in the world. Their flagship game is brimming with quality art, engaging gameplay, and exceptional design - because they believe in employing skilled people to do great work.

And that is where we need you. Because we are looking for talented, passionate gamers who love to develop games, and to make games feel awesome. You don't need to be a Christian to work with us, just love gaming and supportive of our vision.

Here's a run-down on the kind of things we are looking for:

  1. We'd love to find someone who has memorised Vlambeer's "30 rules of Screenshake" presentation and can show us these principles applied in the games they've worked on.
  2. We'd love to find someone who understands what 10-12 year olds find fun, and knows how to tap into that excitement and bring it into our gameplay.
  3. We'd love to find someone who has good experience (indy / personal is fine) with Unity, and with extending Unity with well-structured C#.

So, do you have what it takes?

  • An excellent understanding of Unity3D and C#, and experience in gameplay programming?
  • A good understanding of game design, and what makes a game fun to play?
  • An understanding of object-oriented design and maintainable code principles?
  • A passion for quality and an intuitive understanding of smooth and positive player experience?
  • The ability to support and give constructive feedback to other developers?
  • An excellent understanding of game development processes, as well as techniques such as scrum and kanban?
  • The ability to take direction, as well as contribute to decisions?
  • Understanding of version control (GIT)?
