System Software Engineer Intern
Internship Bracknell (Bracknell Forest) Administration
Job description
Job Title
Systems/Software Engineer, Intern
Job description
HP’s Converged Systems and Solutions engineering group produce virtualized and cloud computer appliances and solutions.
You will join a small R&D team based at Bracknell, who architected and tested the HP CS300 and CS200-HC EVO-RAIL solutions. You will receive some training on how to build and configure these systems, and we then expect you to work independently; setting up solutions for the team, troubleshooting networking issues, liaising with other teams, etc.
This is not a software development role, although there may be some script development and troubleshooting. The role is primarily focused on developing and testing converged systems, and other work extending from that, proceeding to product release.
You will work in a team environment that is supportive, relaxed and professional – but at the same time you will see a strong sense of urgency to all our work, requiring you to fully engage with the team, and help drive project objectives.
We will also encourage you to work on a side project idea in the latter part of the internship; something that could be of value to the team, or that you could take back to your final year at university.
The 13-month internship will allow you to gain a good understanding of a technical department in HP, and offers plenty of practical hands-on experience of HP technology in the workplace.

They will know about firmware updates, software libraries, script languages, databases, and be reasonably familiar with Microsoft Office, Windows, and Linux (or equivalent).
A basic familiarity with VMware or other hypervisor environments, software development and compilation, build tools, system admin tools and networking fundamentals – or at least a good understanding of these – is highly desired.
The successful candidate will demonstrate the ability and self-motivation to work unaided on tasks and assignments.
The successful candidate will demonstrate professional telephone conversation and written explanation skills. The ability to discuss technical issues with engineers and non-technical colleagues, showing consideration and desire to help, is very valuable.
Some demonstrated practical experience developing software for web sites would also be valuable.
