Drug Product Design and Development (DPDD) is a newly formed department within Product Development & Supply, GSK. The Inhaled DPDD group in Ware, UK is a world leading organisation in the development of inhaled medicines. As a formulation scientist in this group you will have the opportunity to work on the development of one or more pipeline medicines which include:
• Solution formulations for nebuliser or intranasal delivery
• Dry powder formulations for protein, peptide and small molecule drugs
• Formulations tailored for new inhaler devices
In your role you will be responsible for conducting (internally or in partnership with a CRO) formulation and manufacturing process development studies. Depending on the stage of the project, this may be in support of evaluating product feasibility through to designing and manufacturing products for clinical trials and demonstrating product robustness ahead of regulatory file and launch. Working under the direction of a line supervisor you will be responsible for the design, execution, interpretation and reporting of experimental protocols in a timely manner in compliance with GMP (where appropriate) and company requirements and philosophy. You will be expected to take a technical leadership role on product development matrix teams, where your role will be to support and influence the design selection and development of a robust control strategy for orally inhaled drug products.
As part of the DPDD group there may be opportunities for you to work on other dosage forms such as oral solids, injectables and dermal products.
You will be based at Ware, Hertfordshire but in the course of your work may be required to travel to GSK sites in Harlow and Stevenage to support projects.

Desired profile
Basic qualifications:
Degree in Pharmacy, Pharmaceutical Sciences, Chemistry, Chemical engineering or equivalent
Able to plan and execute packages of experimental work with minimal supervision
Ability to draw conclusions from experimental data and derive next steps
Articulate communicator both written and orally, and excellent numeracy
Experience in presenting data to a scientific audience
Good organisational and planning abilities with strong attention to detail
Good interpersonal and team working skills
Knowledge of working in a GMP environment
Preferred qualifications:
Recent PhD or Masters in pharmacy or pharmaceutical sciences with experience in inhaled/intranasal drug delivery
Practical experience of formulating inhaled/intranasal drug products, including solutions for nebulisation, nasal sprays and/or dry powder inhaler products
Operational knowledge of plant equipment used for inhaled/intranasal formulation development and batch manufacture
Knowledge of the drug development process and the contribution of wider disciplines (e.g., API and salt selection, analytical techniques, physical properties evaluation) to inhaled/intranasal product development
An understanding of the science underpinning the development of inhaled/intranasal products
Experience of working within project matrix teams and/or with third party contract research organisations (CROs)
