Scientist positions are available at multiple levels. The level and accountabilities will be determined based on education status, years of experience and fit to the specific needs of the Research programs within Neuroscience Discovery. Thus the below are an outline of key elements of the job irrespective of level:
Job Purpose and Key Responsibilities:
• Conduct electrophysiological experiments to support drug discovery programs
• Perform pharmacological, mechanistic and/or phenotypic in vitro experiments in recombinant and native tissues (cells and slices). Experience of in vivo electrophysiology a plus as is high throughout ion channel biology experience.
• Record, analyze and derive research data, interpret and draw appropriate and meaningful conclusions through independent working and/or with supervision
• Resolve technical challenges and deliver results efficiently
• Report and communicate scientific ideas and results in English (both verbal and written)
• Work as a team player with the potential for independent activities
• Work under supervision as needed and/or provide minimal supervision as needed
Accountability:
• Accountable for experimental conduct, recording protocols and results in electronic laboratory notebooks
• Accountable for experimental timelines and delivery of results in accordance with business objectives
• Ensure scientific rigor and integrity of the data collected as well as the conclusions derived
• Accountable for own safety and the safety of the team
• Be accountable for your own development with support from line manager
• Work and behave in compliance with GSK values and code of conduct
Complexity:
• Demonstrate ownership and strive to enhance self-performance and support others in the team to perform
• Where appropriate, prioritize tasks and support others to contribute to the project
• Effectively communicate results to internal groups/project teams
Basic Requirements:
• BSc or Master or PhD degree in Neuroscience, physiology, pharmacology or related area
• Exposure to a range of electrophysiological techniques that can be applied to Neuroscience Drug Discovery
• 1 to 5 years of industry or academic working experience
• Hands-on experience in diverse electrophysiological approaches to understanding ion channel biology and/or neuronal circuits.
Preferred Requirements:
• Profound interest in neurodegenerative and/or neuroexcitation related disease mechanisms
• Ability to hypothesize, propose and execute experiments based on the results and influence program/project decision making
• Knowledge and experience in multiple dimensions of electrophysiological neuroscience that can probe disease relevant mechanisms and the translation of them towards in vivo study through independent working and/or with supervision
• Good publication track record consistent with years of experience
• Industry drug discovery experience
• Effective communication skills
