Job description

Your Responsibilities :
The role:- Clinical Trial Physician (Clinical Unit Cambridge)
Location:- Cambridge, UK

The CUC is a clinical research facility embedded in the heart of Addenbrooke's Hospital in Cambridge since 1999. The Unit specialises in innovative Phase 1 and early Phase 2 studies across a broad range of therapeutic areas, exemplified by recent studies on atherosclerosis, type 2 diabetes, obesity, cognitive impairment, and various aspects of inflammation.

The unit is not a high volume “feed and bleed” facility but a highly innovative facility which is also involved in studies for improving selection for genetically stratified Phase I and II studies. An example of this would be GSK using patient DNA to investigate the effects of genetic variation in a drug target.

The successful candidate will need to be a GMC registered Physician with a passion for excelling clinical research. It would be highly advantageous for a candidate to have had some experience of working within a early phase clinical trial unit.

This would serve as an excellent role for an individual looking to develop their clinical research and clinical development experience within an organisation that promotes internal mobility and development. The career opportunities available to an individual who would excel in the role are abundant and there are many examples of physicians who have built very successful careers within GSK having undertaken this role as a foundation.

Key Responsibilities:
• The physician is responsible and accountable for specific study-related medical decisions
• The physician will act as Study Principal Investigator (Principal Investigator) of clinical trials or sub-Investigator. The role of Principal Investigator is defined by law.
• When such trials are available, the physician will act as Principal Investigator for First-in-Human clinical trials of investigational medicinal product/s, which are critical to the Clinical Unit Cambridge business.
• As Principal Investigator, the physician is responsible and accountable for the overall conduct of clinical trials in healthy volunteers and patients, and ensures all studies are conducted in compliance with the protocol, GMP, GCP, GSK policies and SOP's, and ethics committees' and regulatory authorities' requirements, and the law.
• Scientific leadership, including delivery of robust scientific rationale and technical skills of study conduct in Experimental Medicine and in innovative compound-specific clinical trials:
• The physician is responsible for providing the link between the scientific and medical requirements for compound specific progression and the technical feasibility of conducting innovative clinical trials or Experimental Medicine studies.
• The physician is responsible for building strategic partnerships with drug development partners within and external to the Clinical Unit Cambridge including but not limited to: the GSK project leaders and their teams, clinical and academic staff at Addenbrooke's Hospital and at the University of Cambridge, with a view to collaborating in research.
• Medical input into the training of the clinical staff in the Clinical Unit Cambridge and delivery and maintenance of appropriate in-house clinical skills in the context of clinical trials.
