Within GSK's Biopharmaceutical Discovery Group, we are committed to the research, development and commercialisation of a highly novel pipeline of biopharmaceutical-based therapies to treat unmet medical needs. To help deliver this pipeline we are currently investing significantly in a new function dedicated to antibody engineering and biophysical characterization.

The group will comprise of ~11 staff, focused on iterative design and biophysical characterization to ensure only the best molecules are industrialized. Within this group an opportunity has arisen for biophysical characterization and profiling scientist. The role will be lab-centric and would involve screening antibodies using above mentioned biophysical techniques over a range of parameters in order to provide data on candidate quality. Other responsibilities include working in collaboration with lead molecule discovery and CMC (chemistry manufacturing control) Biopharm development to ensure a single-team continuum in the lead molecule de-risking environment and to guarantee only high quality molecules are candidate selected. Also experience of high throughput techniques and automation systems would be of distinct advantage. In addition to the scientific skills outlined, you must have well-developed communication (both oral and written), interpersonal, data-handling and team working skills.

Desired profile

Basic qualifications:

You will be qualified to degree level or equivalent, in the life sciences with particular experience (either academic or industrial) applying biophysical and biochemical methods to protein (monoclonal antibody or domain antibody) analysis. Your expertise in one or more of the following techniques will be key: dynamic light scattering (DLS), differential scanning calorimetry (DSC), fourier transform infrared (FTIR), circular dichroism (CD), raman and fluorescence spectroscopy. Knowledge of protein structure and biophysical methods are essential.

Preferred qualifications:

A BSc/MSc or equivalent experience of high throughput techniques and automation systems would be beneficial. Some experience of HPLC, such as SEC-HPLC and affinity chromatography is also desirable.
