Job Description Summary
As senior engineer the successful candidate will be part of a highly motivated, dynamic team of engineers working on the delivery and application engineering of existing and new electronic applications, particularly for HVDC converters and the forthcoming “HVDC Grid”. This is a very exciting and dynamic field of power engineering in which GE’s leading contribution has worldwide recognition.
The role of Senior Electronic Hardware Engineer has moderate autonomy, requiring high levels of operational judgment. It gives an excellent opportunity for a motivated candidate to contribute towards technical strategy and policy development and ensure delivery within their area of responsibility.
Whilst based at the HVDC Centre of Excellence in Stafford there will be some international travels to collaborate with other GE teams, test laboratories, strategic suppliers and contract customers.
As a senior engineer it is expected that you will be involved in representing the business externally, through involvement in GE patent applications and technical publications, and through involvement with conferences or professional working bodies (IEC, CIGRE, etc).
The Candidate
The position requires extensive electronics engineering expertise, a good level of technical understanding and a high level of technical competences of digital, and where possible analogue electronic design for an industrial control system. The candidate will likely be educated to degree level or higher in a related technical subject with a proven track record and evidence that the candidate has the in-depth experience and proven abilities to perform the role.
The candidate should demonstrate an in-depth level of knowledge and understanding of electronic components & principles.
In addition to relevant experience, the candidate should demonstrate an ability to think innovatively and apply engineering knowledge across different disciplines.
It is also expected that applicant should have strong experience in industrialisation and supply chain integration.
An enquiring mind and desire to learn new skills, an ability to apply different engineering disciplines and a willingness to share the knowledge are essential qualities.
At this level it is expected a high level of personal judgment and the ability to propose different solutions outside of set parameters with minimal guidance. Uses prior experience and on-the-job training to solve complex tasks. Has access to technical skills and analytic thinking required to solve problems. May use multiple internal and external sources to arrive at decisions.

· Able to work to deadlines with a high quality and accuracy.
· Dynamic and proactive with ability to work on own or as part of a multi-disciplinary engineering team to resolve technical issues.
· Has knowledge of HVDC.
· Ensure correct and accurate technical documentation is generated consistent with engineering policies and procedures.
· Uses technical experience and expertise for data analysis to support recommendations.
· Has awareness of EHS compliance in design and engineering.
· Has knowledge of digital electronic circuit design and development.
· Has knowledge of analogue electronic circuit design and development.
· Has knowledge of schematic capture supervision.
· Has knowledge of PCB layout supervision including rules & constraints.
· Has knowledge of electronic component selection, analysis, and qualification testing.
· Has knowledge of component level design error testing and analysis.
· Has awareness of Controllership and ROHS/REACH compliance.
· Has experience of FPGA component selection.
· Has knowledge of industrial networks like Profibus, Ethernet, Passive Optical Networks (PON).
· Has experience of product verification (bench testing) and validation (integration testing) testing.
· Has experience of type testing - EMC, Environmental, Halt.
· Has experience of electronic design for EMC.
· Has experience of PCB interactions within power electronics systems.
· Has experience of design for manufacture (DFM), test (DFT), industrialisation & design to cost.
· Has practical electronic bench testing experience.
· Has some knowledge and experience of firmware code development. (Preferred attribute)
· Has some knowledge and experience of software code development. (Preferred attribute)
· Has some knowledge and experience of model based product development tools (MATLAB, Mathcad, LTspice). (Preferred attribute)
· Use of processes, systems, methodologies and tools to manage product lifecycle challenges such as obsolescence and component lead time.
· Has experience of maintaining legacy products including updates and improvements to extend product life span.
· Has a competent level of specification & technical report writing acumen.
· Has in-depth knowledge of requirements capture principles.
· Has in-depth knowledge & experience of design failure mode & effect analysis., with an ability to lead DFMEA activities.
· Strong ability of failure analysis and root cause analysis. Has the ability to lead problem solving activities having received 8D training or similar.
· Has knowledge and understanding of latest technical developments in discipline. Guided by external professional practices and policies to identify, develop, evaluate and introduce engineering solutions into deign discipline to meet near term and long-range engineering needs.
· Is actively engaged in production of innovation disclosures relating to new technical ideas to protect technology that gives the business a competitive advantage as well as protecting the intellectual property rights of the company.
· Lead and provide the key technical direction to large projects with critical business impact.
· Interface with electronics manufacturers and integrators to drive innovation and product design.
· Impacts approaches, projects, programs and ways of working in the functional area.
· Impacts quality, efficiency and effectiveness of the team.
· Takes new perspective on existing solutions.
· Developing specialized knowledge in their discipline. Serves as best practice/quality resource.
· Acts as a mentor and/or coach for colleagues with less experience.
· Explains difficult or sensitive information and works to build consensus. Developing persuasion skills required to influence others on topics within field. Able to provide technical consultation on product problems to internal and external stakeholders.
· Is a technical authority and is able to provide technical and best practice/quality guidance to other engineers. Is actively developing specialised knowledge in their discipline to ensure they stay current with the latest technical developments, allowing them to contribute towards business strategy and policy development.
· Chartered Engineer or capable of working towards professional body accreditation (E.G: IEC, CIGRE etc).
· Travel worldwide for product validations, product testing, supply chain integration activities, plus attendance to industry conferences and exhibitions.
