Job description

Job Description Summary

In this role, you will aim to establish a mapping between high-fidelity multi-physics models and simple thermal models by training machine learning algorithms on existing simulation data. A key area of focus will be developing transfer functions that link the high-fidelity models to the simpler thermal models.

Job Description

Background

The electron beam melting technology used in layer-wise powder bed additive manufacturing generates a process that is difficult to control and observe in-operando. Consequently, the development of the EBM powder bed fusion process for different materials and applications relies extensively on simulations across many different time and length scales, involving many levels of physics. These range from comprehensive multi-physics models to coarse-grained thermal conductivity models. Bridging the different levels of physics across these scales presents a significant challenge. However, it is crucial to ensure that simulation tools agree in overlapping domains. This thesis aims to establish a mapping between a multi-physics model and a thermal model, and to validate the latter through experiments provided by Colibrium Additive.

Aim

  • To train and validate a machine learning algorithm to existing simulation data.
  • To use said model and/or stochastic optimisation algorithms to find a transfer function from the high-fidelity model to the thermal model.

Qualifications

  • Master student within applied physic, applied mathematics or equivalent.
  • Experience with machine learning algorithms, such as artificial neural networks, as well as stochastic optimisation algorithms.
  • Experience in programming (Python, C#, or C++) and development frameworks such as Visual Studio and Git
  • Solid foundations in both physics and mathematics
  • Fluency in English and Swedish, both written and spoken.

Duration

  • Proposed thesis work period: 20th January 2025 to 15th June 2025 (Dates can be flexible with ± 7 days)
  • Academic Credits: Equivalent to 30 ECTS

Location

Location is the Colibrium Additive site in Mölnlycke, Sweden. This is an onsite opportunity that includes flexibility to work Hybrid/Remote 1-2 days a week when possible.

Applications should include your CV and a brief personal letter stating your interests within the given area and your thoughts and credentials. We are continuously screening applications and will fill the position as soon as we find a good match. Please note that applications arriving later than the last application date will not be taken into consideration. So do not hesitate to send in your application.

We want your application at the latest November 11th, 2024. Please note that applications by email will not be accepted.
