Job Description Summary
The FACTS Protection Engineer manages all aspects of protection systems associated with integration of FACTS projects. This role interfaces with both the proposal tendering team and the project execution team, as well as work on product development programs. The role includes design of protection systems for Synchronous Condensers, STATCOMs and Fixed Series Capacitor projects.
Job Description
Essential Responsibilities:
· Perform protection analysis and coordination studies for traditional protection schemes (bus, transformer, generator, feeder) and custom FACTS protection schemes.
· Calculate protection relay settings for diverse equipment and system configurations; create and manage relay setting files.
· Support Factory Acceptance Testing (FAT), Site Acceptance Testing (SAT), commissioning, and troubleshooting of protection systems and relay logic.
· Calculate and manage settings for excitation systems (EX2100e), motor starting VFDs, cooling systems and other Intelligent Electronic Devices (IEDs) associated with FACTS projects.
· Implement and maintain robust settings management systems for configuration control and auditing.
· Develop and maintain detailed documentation for protection studies, relay settings, test results, and troubleshooting activities.
· Ensure compliance with applicable standards (IEC, IEEE, NERC, utility-specific requirements) and internal engineering practices. Experience with NERC PRC-019 and related standards is desirable.
· Collaborate with project engineers, controls engineers, system study engineers, commissioning teams, and customers to align protection schemes with project requirements.
· Provide technical support throughout proposal, design, execution, and post-commissioning phases.
Required Qualifications:
· Bachelor’s or Master’s degree in Electrical Engineering or equivalent discipline.
· Minimum 3 years’ experience in protection engineering for electric power systems, experience with GE Multilin and SEL relays is desirable.
· Minimum 3 years’ experience hands-on experience with protection coordination studies, relay setting calculations, and settings management systems.
· Minimum 3 years’ experience with industry-standard protection software (e.g., ETAP, CAPE, GE EnerVista, SEL AcSELerator).
Desired Characteristics:
· Strong analytical, written, and oral communication skills.
· Experience supporting testing, commissioning, and troubleshooting of protection systems.
· Detail-oriented with robust documentation and configuration management skills.
· Ability to work effectively in a matrixed, multi-disciplinary team environment.
· Willingness to travel (15-30% typical).
· Familiarity with excitation systems (EX2100e), VFDs, and IED configuration and protection principles.
· Experience with digital tools or platforms for settings management
The salary range for this position is 88,600.00 - 118,100.00 Annual. The specific salary offered to a candidate may be influenced by a variety of factors including the candidate’s experience, their education, and the work location. In addition, this position is eligible for a performance bonus. 88,600.00 - 118,100.00 - 147,600.00 USD Annual
