We work with some of the world’s major energy, maritime and industrial organizations, helping to enable a transition to energy efficiency and decarbonization, including through our specialist motors, drives and control technologies.An exciting opportunity has arisen for a talented and experienced Drives Control Engineer to join GE Power Conversion’s Systems Engineering group.
The Lead Drives Control Engineer is responsible for Control Software and key Control Hardware for GE Power (PC)’s range of Electric Drives. This is a technical role and will involve working in a multi-disciplinary team of engineers to specify, design, code & validate control systems for MW-scale power electronic drive systems for Marine, Energy and Industry applications.

Role and Responsibilities
Responsible for & managing the design, develop and maintain Drive Control Systems technology:
Control algorithms, techniques, software and modules.
Application software and standards.
Core Drive Control PCB hardware.
FPGA configurations and I/O interfacing.
Developing and maintaining good engineering interfaces to:
ITO sales team.
Field / commissioning engineering.
Automation Control Dept. firmware development.
Peer groups in other parts of GE PC and other parts of GE.
Essential Requirements
Should include a strong knowledge and significant experience of Variable Speed Drive Control Schemes
Control Systems Design (Linear & Non-linear control system design).
Experience of C code programming & awareness of embedded software design, microprocessor & FPGA programming.
Control System Design / Simulation tools such as Matlab Simulink.
Power electronics – Diodes, Thyristors, IGBTs, GTOs, IGCTs, MOSFETS, SiC, GaN etc.
Understanding of electrical machines: DC, Induction, Synchronous, Permanent magnet machines.
Converter and inverter power stack configurations for such machines.
Suitable control strategies for such power electronics converter systems and electrical machines.
PWM control schemes and other switching strategies.
Awareness of the side effects of the Drive on the wider system; heating, harmonics, noise.
Designing hardware / software systems to control such Drives.
Documentation standards.
Discipline of Product Life Cycle, from initial design to detailed design and specification, through levels of testing and validation, then through into maintenance.

Qualifications/Requirements
Bachelor’s degree from an accredited university or college (or equivalent qualification) in Electrical Engineering or equivalent subject.
Experience of working with Variable Speed Drive technology.
Experience leading a technical team of Software, Hardware or Control engineers.
Experience of system integration working on multi-discipline projects.
Electrical engineering in relevant industry (Marine, Energy, Renewables, Oil & Gas, etc.).
Experience in integrated control schemes with PLCs, HMI, and Drives.
LV and MV variable speed drives, motors.
On site commissioning / or test environment on power system / equipment.
Existing or the ability to obtain the higher levels of UK Security Clearance, including “SC Clearance” and “UK Eyes Only Clearance”, are required for this role.
