Job Description Summary

The Lead Criticality Safety Engineer provides technical nuclear safety support of fuel manufacturing operations at the Global Nuclear Fuel (GNF) facility in Wilmington NC. In this role you will utilize knowledge of nuclear safety principles and engineering to analyze process operations and implement effective nuclear safety controls. You will work closely with engineering and operations staff to ensure the safe and compliant manufacturing of nuclear fuel.

The Lead Criticality Safety Engineer is responsible for evaluating credible criticality accident sequences, performing Monte Carlo code calculations, and documenting Nuclear Criticality Safety Evaluations (NCSE). This role also reviews and approves proposed facility changes, performs audits of operations and safety controls, participates on Integrated Safety Analysis (ISA) teams, and support criticality safety program improvements. The position will primarily support existing GNF nuclear fuel manufacturing operations at the Wilmington site; as well as advanced fuel manufacturing projects and satellite nuclear business units as needed.

Roles and Responsibilities

  • Document Nuclear Criticality Safety Evaluations (NCSEs) required to demonstrate safety for new or fuel manufacturing operations and modifications to existing facilities.
  • Evaluate normal and credible abnormal conditions for facilities and operations.
  • Establish criticality limits on controlled parameters, specify criticality control requirements and functionality, and perform neutronics calculations.
  • Support senior criticality safety staff with development of Monte Carlo code validation reports.
  • Participate on ISA team meetings as a member of criticality safety to support development of the process hazard analysis and supporting risk assessments.
  • Review and approve design changes and ensure the impacts to criticality safety are addressed.
  • Review and approve facility documentation such as procedures, training, and functional test instructions to ensure criticality requirements are properly implemented.
  • Support routine NRC inspections of the facility operations and the criticality safety program.
  • Provide advice and counsel to project management and operations management on matters of the criticality safety program and implementation of controls.
  • Perform routine audits of facility operations and surveillances of safety controls
  • Serve on the site Emergency Organization as a hazard assessment team member and backup Nuclear Safety Advisor.

Required Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s degree in Engineering or Science.
  • Minimum 3 years of experience in Criticality Safety.
  • Eligibility Requirements:

Eligibility Requirements

  • For Controlled Access Area: must be able to successfully pass a Nuclear Safety Training Test; follow strict radiation protection, criticality, and industrial safety regulations; wear protective clothing to enter the area.
  • Ability to walk up and down stairs. 
  • Must be 18 years or older and have legal authorization to work in the United States.

Desired Characteristics

  • Proficiency with Monte Carlo methods such as KENO and MCNP.
  • Experience in application of the double contingency principle and authoring NCSEs.
  • Experience working at a nuclear fuel manufacturing facility.
  • Experience with 10CFR70 licensing and ISA program implementation.
  • Advanced degree (MS or Ph.D.) in Nuclear Engineering or Physics.
  • Ability to develop creative solutions for complex, challenging issues.
  • Ability to explain complex issues to a non-technical audience.
  • Positive track record of experience resolving technical issues.
  • Excellent interpersonal and communication skills.
  • Strong written communication skills.
  • Proven ability to influence regulators, other leaders, and engineers
  • Experience as a member of an Emergency Organization.
