Join the New Ventures & Strategy Group to accelerate Grid Systems Integration (GSI) innovation. Help make GSI a best in class, IP driven organization. You will independently own IP intelligence, landscaping, FTO triage, and monetization scouting across electrical systems. Operating with a global lens, you’ll convert fast moving technical and market signals into patent strategy, licensing leads, standards opportunities, and clear recommendations for decision makers.
This role works in a matrix with senior team members (IP Lead Engineer, Lead IP Specialist, IP Counsel) and offers a defined growth path to support and progressively co lead high impact initiatives.
Job Description
What You’ll Do
1) AI‑led IP Strategy & Insights
· Exploit AI/ML-enabled tools for patent intelligence and portfolio management.
· Transform complex data into concise, actionable briefs for technical, legal, and business stakeholders.
2) Landscaping, Novelty & FTO
· Conduct prior-art searches to assess patentability of new ideas as well as comprehensive IP landscape analyses to identify potential risks and opportunities within the existing patent ecosystem.
· Deliver Freedom-to-Operate (FTO) assessments with risk heatmaps, claim charts, and design-around options.
· Perform targeted searches of prior art and niche literature to aid in patent oppositions and invalidations.
· Identify white spaces to guide systematic invention and targeted filings.
· Collaborate with the team to convert electrical systems innovations (e.g., Power electronics, Power Systems, HVDC & FACTS systems including control and protection, converter technologies, valves) into patentable assets and trade secrets.
· Assess patent portfolios for legal strength, market relevance, and technology impact; recommend filing, continuation, abandonment, or licensing actions.
3) Monetization & Cross‑Licensing
· Benchmark competitors and identify collaboration/licensing opportunities.
· Generate in-licensing and out-licensing leads; prepare target shortlists and value hypotheses (revenue, leverage, risk mitigation).
· Work with Business Development and the Lead IP Specialist to advance qualified opportunities from concept to term sheet.
4) Standards, SEPs & Advocacy
· Map portfolios to standards work items; pre‑screen for potential SEPs and assemble essentiality evidence packs with the IP Lead Engineer and counsel.
· Prepare data‑backed talking points for trade associations and policy engagement.
5) Portfolio Analytics & Governance
· Provide analytics for portfolio shaping (file/continue/abandon), pruning, and continuation strategies.
· Support patent drafting, prosecution, opposition, invalidation, and infringement processes with internal stakeholders and external counsel worldwide; coordinate filing strategies across jurisdictions.
· Track competitor IP; generate actionable insights for technology roadmaps and product strategies.
· Contribute to IP valuation, licensing structures (field‑of‑use, territory, royalty), and partnership deals aligned to GSI programs.
· Collaborate globally across time zones; facilitate workshops, invention disclosures, and IP training for engineering teams.
What You Bring
· Bachelor’s in Electrical Engineering, Power Systems Engineering, Power Electronics, Physics, or equivalent and preferably understanding of HVDC and FACTS products and technology.
· Experience as IP Engineer or Analyst and a good understanding of patent law, how to read, understand, search for, and identify relevant patents.
· Proficiency with patent/intel tools (IPO/WIPO, Derwent, Questel, Patsnap, Espacenet, Google Patents), and BI/analytics (e.g., Excel/Power BI; basics of SQL/Python are a plus).
· Knowledge and structured learning around novel tools for IP (ie AI) would be a plus.
· Demonstrated ability to craft clear, concise briefs for technical, legal, and commercial audiences.
· Familiarity with FTO methods, IP landscaping, and competitive intelligence.
· Demonstrated experience in IP strategy, patent analysis/landscaping, or technology commercialization in the energy/grid/automation domain.
· Proven ability to interpret claims and complex technical disclosures; proficiency with IP databases and tools.
Preferred (India‑relevant) - Registered Indian Patent Agent is a plus (not mandatory).
