Role Summary/Purpose

Responsible for supporting and, where appropriate, driving the global IP strategy for one or more defined sectors in GE’s Biopharma business. Reporting to a more senior GE Biopharma IP Counsel, this role will provide an opportunity to work with a cross-functional team on specific aspects of IP strategy across GE Biopharma, including general IP counseling, idea generation through patent filing, prosecution, maintenance, freedom-to-operate, as well as licensing and enforcement.
Essential Responsibilities

All GE employees may be considered for this role. Candidates should note that this role will be in scope for the proposed transition of GE Biopharma to Danaher and will transfer to Danaher at close of this transaction.

• Works closely with product development teams to ensure that sufficient ideas and Invention Disclosures are generated, and to develop IP strategies using various types of IP to create meaningful IP assets.
• Prepares high quality patent applications on commercially significant inventions by working with R&D, business managers and marketing.
• Efficiently advances prosecution of pending patent applications and manages global patent portfolio to ensure that meaningful protection is obtained.
• Ensures freedom-to-operate and minimizes exposure to third party IP, including providing/drafting of opinions and supporting patent oppositions.
• Provides deep patent analysis expertise to support business development and licensing team.
• Assists with drafting and negotiation of IP-related agreements as well as IP specific terms in other agreements.
• Work closely with other lawyers in addressing mixed intellectual property/general legal issues.
• Provide IP advice and training as a member of multi-functional teams.
• Uses a range of tools and data sources to understand the internal and external IP environment.
Qualifications/Requirements

1. JD (or global equivalent) and member of good standing of the bar of any state preferred; however, highly qualified patent agents will be considered.
2. Registered to practice before the U.S. Patent and Trademark Office.
3. Technical background in electrical, chemical or mechanical engineering, software, physics or equivalent.
4. At least 3 years of experience as a practicing patent attorney.
5. Excellent written and oral communication skills.
6. Capable of devising innovative IP strategies.

1. Knowledge of laws, regulations, practices and procedures relating to patent procurement in US, Europe and Asia
2. Experience prioritizing competing demands to make real time decisions/recommendations in a fast-paced environment.
3. Demonstrated ability to quickly identify & prioritize issues, develop process-driven solutions, and effectively communicate with a wide range of people.
4. Experience working in the life sciences or healthcare sector.
