Job Description Summary
As an Advanced Lead Research Scientist – Ceramics in the Materials Organization you will conduct research on developing advanced ceramic materials and processes for a broad range of current and future GE Aerospace products. Areas of focus include environmental barrier coatings (CMCs and EBCs) for extreme environments, thermal barrier coatings (TBCs), and functional ceramics for sensors and coatings.
Job Description
ESSENTIAL RESPONSIBILITIES:
In this job you will:
·
Conduct basic and applied research in processes for advanced ceramics of interest to GE Aerospace businesses and external funding agencies
·
Develop novel advanced ceramics for various GE Aerospace products including but not limited to Civil and Military products and transition these technologies to GE Aerospace businesses
·
Develop manufacturing processes for new and existing advanced ceramics in a lab and production environment
·
Identify technology trends in advanced ceramics and develop technical roadmaps to address them
·
Collaborate with GE Aerospace’s internal product departments, global R&D sites, external and internal material developers, strategic suppliers, and universities
·
Characterize and identify degradation modes and approaches for improving the lifetime of advanced ceramics in extreme environments
·
Prepare research proposals for external funding
·
Invent and patent when appropriate
·
Deliver effective presentations, reports, publications to GE Aerospace Research, GE Aerospace businesses, government agencies, and professional societies when appropriate
QUALIFICATIONS/REQUIREMENTS:

PhD in Materials Science and Engineering or related discipline with a minimum of 3 years’ experience or Master’s degree in Materials Science and Engineering or related discipline with a minimum of 6 years of experience.

Experience in material and process development
·
Demonstrated understanding of ceramic property-process-microstructure relationships
·
Demonstrated excellence in research through peer reviewed publications
·
Demonstrated ability to solve complex technical problems
·
Excellent oral and written communication skills
·
US Citizenship required
·
Must be willing to work out of an office located in Niskayuna, NY.
DESIRED CHARACTERISTICS :
·
Experience in characterization and testing of structural or functional ceramics
·
Experience in chemical vapor deposition or chemical vapor infiltration
·
Very good understanding of thermodynamics, degradation kinetics, phase stability and diffusion in high temperature material systems
·
Experience transferring technology from the laboratory to commercialization
·
Experience with slurry development
·
Experience working on government contracts and preparing proposals
·
Experience with statistical analysis, data analytics, and statistical process control
·
Passion for hands on development and laboratory work
·
Demonstrated ability to adapt to multidisciplinary teams in a fast-paced dynamic working environment
The base pay range for this position is 90,000 – 175,000 USD annually . The specific pay offered may be influenced by a variety of factors, including the candidate’s experience, education, and skill set. This position is also eligible for an annual discretionary bonus based on a percentage of your base salary/ commission based on the plan. This posting is expected to close March 31st, 2026
