Who will I work for, and what will I do?

As an Apprentice Service Engineer, you will be travelling throughout the country working from client sites getting the opportunity to meet new people, developing new experiences and working with some really great companies. As well as this, we will support your development by partnering up with an experienced Engineer (Buddy/Mentor system) and receive on-going support from your training provider - Firebrand.

Throughout the course of your apprenticeship and in addition to the training you receive from Firebrand, you will be required to spend time at their head office based in Coventry, however, your role will predominately be field based and ideally, you will be living in London / Southeast (Hertfordshire / Essex / Kent / Surrey).

Job objectives and responsibilities:

  • To work as a member of the Security Systems Operations Field service team, working closely with the National Service Manager and Service Desk
  • To attend training and complete course work on time and to a high standard and ensure all assignments are handed in within the allocated timescale
  • Assisting Senior / Local Engineer in the installation and small works of a variety of electronic security systems, but mainly Access Control, Intruder Alarms and CCTV
  • Assisting Senior / Local Engineer in the Planned Preventative Maintenance (PPM) and reactive fault calls of a variety of electronic security systems, but mainly Access Control, Intruder Alarms and CCTV
  • To conduct yourself in a safe and diligent manner and comply with health and safety policies and procedures
  • Ensure current knowledge and understanding of health and safety regulations and procedures is maintained
  • Working at heights
  • Keep up to date, so far as necessary, for the efficient executing of your job, with new legislation, procedures and techniques
  • To be conversant with and participate in activities and developments relevant to the post
  • To act professionally at all times and maintain strict confidentiality and discretion at all times
  • To undertake any other duties as may be reasonably required commensurate with the post

What training will I receive?

Firebrand offers a unique Higher Level 4 IT Apprenticeship scheme that provides award-winning industry training and certifications, valuable work experience and offers on-going support all with the ultimate goal of securing you a long-term career within the world of technology.

During your 24 month IT apprenticeship programme, Firebrand will provide residential training at our distraction-free training centre. Our method of accelerated training allows you to achieve industry-recognised certifications such as CompTIA, ITIL and Microsoft faster, giving you more time to put your new skills in to practice within a working environment. Firebrand will also provide you with a Mentor who will be supporting and assisting you with your development. By the end of your 24 month apprenticeship, in addition to having numerous industry recoginesed qualifications, a steady career with a supportive employer, you will also be recognised by the British Computer Society (BCS) for entry onto the register of IT Technicians, confirming SFIA level 3 professional competence.

What experience do I need?

Due to the nature of the role and environment, although technically you`ll be passionate and demonstrate core IT skills, our focus will be on your communication skills and ability to speak with clients. You`ll show a commitment to quality as well as a thorough approach to work. Additionally, you will have:

  • At least five GCSEs (or equivalent) at Grade C or above including Maths, English and either IT or Science.
  • Ideally, you will have either a minimum of two A levels (or equivalent) a Level 3 Apprenticeship qualification or Level 3 BTEC
  • Understands the basic principles of networking, protocols and associated technologies such as: OSI layer model, IP, TCP/IP, routing and switching, WANs, LANs)
  • Understands the causes and consequences of system failure including load balance and storage protocols and responds appropriately
  • Demonstrate formal qualification / learning in IT or STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics) type subject
  • High level of numeracy & High level of literacy
  • Assertiveness - ability to ensure that others meet agreed deadlines
  • Excellent communication skills
  • Ability to work on own with supervision
  • Ability to prioritise
  • Ability to accept responsibility for timely completion of workload

Note: It is a requirement that all Service Engineers to be able to drive; therefore a full driving licence is essential to ongoing employment within this role. If a licence is not achievable on initial uptake of this role there must be demonstrable efforts to obtain this within a reasonable timescale
