The EY Frank Hirth team have worked with US and UK private clients for over 45 years, guiding them through complex regulations and tax planning issues that apply across borders.
Second year Tax Associates are expected to:
· Have a good developing knowledge of both US and/or UK taxation, having experienced an entire tax cycle, completed the EA qualification and begun the ATT/CPA qualification (if eligible).
· Tax Associates should demonstrate excellent compliance skills, preparing increasingly complex tax returns and applying training received to ensure clients receive an exceptional level of service.
· Tax Associates should have a good – although always developing - commercial awareness, and should consider budgets, workloads, and deadlines before accepting or commencing any work.
· Tax Associates should accurately prepare a wide variety of complex US and/or UK tax returns with a minimal amount of review points, as well as prepare written communication to clients, tax authorities and third parties covering both administrative and less complex technical issues. In addition, Tax Associates may attend client meetings, taking notes and utilising the opportunity to develop their understanding of client needs, the individual clients, and their preferences.
· Tax Associates will also have the opportunity to have more contact with the IRS/HMRC.
· Tax Associates are expected to have a good understanding of their clients, and to work with seniors and managers in ensuring high standards are maintained at all times. As part of this,
· Tax Associates should plan their workloads, ensure they liaise with seniors and managers regarding completion dates and utilise support available to re-allocate work where necessary to ensure clients’ deadlines are met at all times.
· Tax Associates will rotate every six months, to assist them in developing their understanding of different areas of tax and different working styles.
· All Tax Associates will be expected to prepare UK individual tax returns, US form 1040 and related schedules and 5471 ad 8865s. The below gives an overview of the areas of work staff in different groups may expect to be exposed to.
US and UK Private Client and HNW Group
· Prepare US form 1040NR and related forms and schedules; prepare state individual tax forms and develop awareness of state filings; prepare US forms 1040NR and related schedules; prepare US forms 3520A, 3520 and 8858.
· Develop understanding of domicile and residence issues and become familiar with the relevant UK forms.
· Business and Entrepreneurs Group
· Prepare US forms 8858, 1065, 1120, 1120S and 1120F.
· Develop an awareness of state filings both personal and corporate; prepare UK personal income tax returns; UK partnership tax returns and accounts for UK corporation tax returns.
· Develop understanding of domicile and residence issues.
· Prepare fully referenced accounts of audit files up to finalization stage with VAT compliance process.
