Project 1: Research Description - Fiber Network Deployment – Civil Work related methods and techniques used in Fiber Deployment projects

Today’s digital life is expanding into more areas of society and business. When one person is connected their life changes, and when everything is connected - our world changes. In the Networked Society, the access to send and receive data is central to us. The need for fiber-optic transmission is rapidly increasing to cope with the ever increasing bandwidth requirement driven by new applications, specifically video related services. Fiber is also a key enabler for the next generation all-optical IP network.

The purpose of this thesis work is to investigate different Civil Works related deployment techniques that can be used when building Fiber Networks. As the Civil Work related part, especially for underground networks, represents the largest cost in Fiber deployment projects, it is important that we have a good understanding of the different methods and techniques to be used, their associated benefits and cost as well as applicability in different types of deployment scenarios.

In this thesis work you will be part of a dedicated team working with fiber deployment projects globally. You will have the unique opportunity to be part of creating the ways of working and recommendations for our fiber business globally. The scope will depend on your background and interests.

Project 4: Research Description - Customer Support Business Models in the Digital Age

The traditional telecom support services business is rapidly evolving when we introduce cloud in the convergence of Telecom and IT. The telecom business has been for many years driven and contracted, delivered and performed based on customers demand and request through requests for proposals. This has led to that the tailoring of services between operators is large and the possibility for standardization is limited. At the same time the IT industry has been strict on what and how to contract and deliver support services with the result of a high degree of standardization leading to efficient delivery structure in tools, processes and methods.

When these two industries now are coming closer to each other there is a need for a new and state of the art method for contracting and delivering the service. In order to stick out and be regarded as market leader requires new tools, new ways of working, new methods and new knowledge. The convergence of the two industries into the Digital Age are opening the possibilities for new business models.

The purpose of this work is to explore business models from other industries in the customer support service area. Which business models are successful in growing the business in a world where customer support services are more commoditized? What makes the new and state of the art way of supporting products, solutions and networks in the Digital Age? What is the new industry dynamics that is required to be the leader? What are the tools and competence required to stand out and being successful?

The thesis shall require a comprehensive market analysis to find the unique selling points when the new industry domain is being formed. A competitive analysis has to be made and the finding shall be the differentiator for Ericsson going forward. The scope will depend on your background and interests.
